With our first feature for 2012 we introduce Pistonsbeneath, a name that has quietly been doing the rounds on the underground circuit for some time now and one associated with an uncompromising approach to quality bass music. The duo, fronted by Jon Burl, have quietly been building a wide-ranging repertoire of sub-driven beats and are set to unleash seven of them in the next week on the '24th Century EP' via the ever-impressive MindStep Music imprint. Focusing on an effective use of space, interesting sampling and big, lurking basslines, Pistonsbeneath provide a refreshing rework of the original elements of the now-inescapably-global dubstep sound that includes, perhaps most importantly, the wealth of variation that that original sound template was open to. We caught up with Jon for an interview and he's also put together an epic mix to mark the 30th exclusive mix in our series, and the first of the new year.

Hedmuk: To introduce yourself, what's your name, where do you hail from and how would you describe your sound?

Pistonsbeneath: I'm Jon, I'm from the Croydon area and I'd describe Pistonsbeneath tunes as atmospheric, sub-driven, sci-fi horror.

H: How long have you been producing for, and is Pistonsbeneath your first venture into making music?

P: I make the tunes with a friend of mine, we have setups at both of our places. We've both been messing around with music independently since we were young, but we started making a few tunes around 2005/6 when I showed him dubstep. We've been getting a bit more serious over the last 18 months, trying to bring the production up to par and were going to start sticking out some tunes under my alias Pistonsbeneath, sort of the way Goldie and Rob Playford worked: he just likes to sit at the computer making the beats with me and doesn't like to be on the radar, while I'm more the public face and the DJ. Obviously there's the MindStep '24th Century EP' and some of the tunes you're going to be hearing at first we made a long time ago, but we've got a lot of new tunes in the pipeline and hopefully we'll be getting some of them out in the second half of 2012.

H: Many will know you as the man behind the now-defunct DubKulture night at the Black Sheep Bar, can you enlighten us as to the reasons behind the night's sudden demise? And do you plan to be running anything similar again in the near future?

DubKulture was great and I made so many fantastic links through it, so I'm not going to try and say I regret it at all: without it, who knows where I'd be. The man that called me up to do it was Gavin, and he had a lot more input at that point, if not for Gavin it would not have happened. It was just to do a cover set as there was nothing on that Wednesday and over 100 people walked in expecting to hear 'Sierra Leone', Dr. P and Borgore and I played DMZ, Vex'd and Distance to them (laughs). They all wanted more though, and not necessarily because of the fact that on that night there was a powercut at 11.

In the beginning it was busy and the Sheep were pushing the event and people came and we got between 100 and 150 people on a Wednesday night in Croydon. It had busier nights than that later, and some huge names played for me that were local. They would say the event ran out of steam but I would argue they didn't want to do anything to promote it given i was running/residenting their night for them. So of course it died a death, I dont think they wanted it there in the end especially given my lack of willingness to compromise to the extent they wanted.

H: Your debut release, the '24th Century EP', is about to drop on MindStep; how did you get involved with the label, and what was the process behind selecting the tracks for your first appearance on the label?

P: I got involved having had Syte play at DubKulture a few times (my favourite DJ technically to watch, and so underrated) and had him crash at my gaff as he lives like a million miles outside London and we got chatting and I showed him some tunes. We had some good chats over greasy spoon brekkies too. I knew Crises already as well, as he'd played DubKulture a couple of times for me and he had 'Unspeakable' a while back and repped it.

The track selection came about from a combination of the three of us and we were initially gonna do a 5-tracker but just weren't willing to let any of those 7 go in the end. There were a lot more tracks than that in the pool at one point, but it got to a point where it had to be those 7. Crises decided the final running order as I had no huge preference.

H: You have, in the past, been quite vocal about some of the divisions within dubstep: is this something you continue to feel strongly about, and do you see some vindication in the recent return to prominence of the sound's original components of bass and space?

P: To be honest, I don't feel that strongly about it these days: people like what they're going to like and there's nothing you can do to prove to someone one tune is better than another as it's so subjective. Most people these days under a certain age are happy listening to YouTube downloaded files, so God knows. It's great that everyone's kind of back on it, it was always on the cards really though. I do feel a load of people had just had enough and willed it to happen.

To an extent it's all an illusion anyway, and you go to a club in a run of the mill city centre a la Croydon and you will find nobody wants to party in the 'dungeon'. They just want the usual suspects regardless, and Youngsta's show hasn't hugely impacted on their lives the way it has to so many new people of late. Of course there is more longevity in this real shit and people are actually willing to pay for it and not just torrent it, but there will always be those people that don't want it and just want to brock out to Nero and Pendulum. One group that've really surprised me and have been sending me the best produced tracks of late are Mt. Eden...

H: You've done something pretty interesting with your mix for us: take us through how you went about putting it all together.

Oh God, where to start? Well some people might remember my older mixes like 'I Love Bassick' (named after the Bassick nights I put on in 2007-2008 in Croydon) and the last one before 'Sound of Gemini' that had loads of tunes mashed together with no edge, well this is a far better realised version of that with cuts, teases, extreme militant EQ-ing and rephrasing tunes where necessary: it's a mix to end all mixes. The mix is treated the same as a tune using Ableton Live, a collage has been built, woven together and comprising of dubs I've been sent and the true sound classics and a few random tunes thrown in. Please note it's not just a 'dungeon' mix, or a tearout mix, or a pad oriented lush atmospheric workout but it covers tons of ground and never leaves you wanting...if I may say so myself.

H: Finally, have you got any forthcomings or upcoming gigs that you'd like to put the word out about?

2011 has seen an explosion in interest for what, over the course of the year, has been termed and re-termed multiple times but ultimately is dubstep in its most elemental form. Perverse have risen through the ranks at an incredible speed this year and are on course to make the coming year their own: what is important about the duo, though, is a dedication (shared with a number of the year's other breakthrough producers, such as Killawatt, Thelem, District and Sleeper) to progression. With many people happy to level the lazy argument that the deeper end of the 140bpm spectrum has become 'boring' or 'repetitive' it is necessary for producers to continue to strive for originality and, to a certain extent, for the fans to demand it too. Originality is something that this New Zealand duo have, and to note it's correlation with their rapid ascent this year is key. We caught up with them for an interview and got them to lay down the latest instalment in our exclusive mix series.

Hedmuk: As an introduction, what are your names, where are you from and how would you describe your sound?

Brett & Alex: We are Brett & Alex [aka Perverse] and we're based in Auckland, New Zealand but originally from South Africa and Scotland respectively. We like to think of our sound as clean, deep, emotional, bass-driven and thought-provoking.

H: Had either of you previously been involved in making music in any form, or is Perverse your first real venture?

Brett: Both of us produced under different aliases before meeting: I produced under the name Ducer and Alex under the name Zander. For me, Perverse was the first serious thing I had done.

Alex: I had been messing around with producing for about 2 years before forming Perverse with Brett. I didn't really find my "sound" until about 4-5 months ago; I used to experiment in all kinds of beats like trip-hop, D&B and experimental stuff, but dubstep was always my favorite.

H: In only a matter of months you've successfully caught the ears of many of the most influential DJs and producers, including the likes of Youngsta and J:Kenzo: is there anything in particular that you would out this down to? Does this kind of support add an extra element of pressure when you come to making new beats?

B & A: The way we look at it, in most cases these guys are bombarded with tunes daily so it's not common that they just happen to stumble across up-and-comers. For us it was about chasing down those we felt might connect and feel the music we are producing, and only sending our best quality stuff: nothing we were unhappy with. We always sent what was, in our eyes, [music that was produced] to the best of our ability.

It does [add an extra element of pressure] in the respect that we have to maintain a standard, but that can only be a good thing.

H: How do you find producing as a duo? Do you always produce together, or have you other solo projects outside of Perverse?

Brett: We may not always start a tune together but we always finish it together. We spend most nights in the studio so just bounce ideas off each other and let the tune write itself a lot of the time. I think both of us have singular projects on the go as well, but not with the same passion I have for Perverse.

Alex: I found it very hard to work with others before working with Brett. We both work really well together and our styles seem to merge when making a tune. I make tunes on the side too but they won't see the light of day for a long time, I'm experimenting with loads of styles at the moment.

H: How much of a scene/following for dubstep is there in New Zealand? How did you first come into contact with dubstep, in particular the deeper sound that you're building yourselves?

B & A: Bass driven music has always had a huge following here, especially in drum and bass. The scene is extremely healthy catering to those of all tastes, it's continually growing and 9 times out of 10 in a positive way. Both of us were introduced to dubstep through friends and the internet, it became quite the addiction very quickly. The first artists we came into contact with were people like Mala, Vex'd, Distance, Burial, Pinch, Cyrus, Cluekid, Benga and Skream. I guess it was that first taste of the darker, minimal heavier vibe that we fell in love with and that is why we choose to reflect that in what we produce. You can possibly hear their influences in our stuff but hopefully it has an individual sound as well.

H: You've recently joined Rood FM, with your Monday night show: how did this come about? What sort of vibe do you aim to create with the show?

B & A: We were approached by Fish, one of the owners of RoodFM, saying he'd heard some of our stuff and wanted to know if we'd like a slot. To have a radio show was definitely a goal of ours but we didn't think it would come so quickly. We play anything we are feeling and we like to have a laugh. Anyone that has tuned in knows we don't take anything too seriously and we like to have fun, while interacting with the people in the chatroom and people on Facebook and AIM.

H: Can you take us through how you went about putting together your mix for us?

B & A: We just chucked a bunch of tunes we were feeling together and had a jam, as well as including a few of ours for good measure. To be honest, planning mixes for us never seems to really flow it's better just to have a jam and let the mix dictate itself.

H: Finally, are there any forthcomings or anything else in the pipeline that you'd like to put the word out about?

B & A: Definitely. We're stoked with the reception the Innamind release has received and are truly honoured to be a part of a release with some good friends and people we look up to. 'Skylark' is currently sitting at #5 in the sales chart (shameless self-promotion).

We also have a forthcoming vinyl release featuring 3 of our favourite tracks, coming early next year as well as a few other releases and projects in the works which will hopefully see the light of day very soon. There's collabs too, with some of our favourite artists and people we really look up to.

Big shout out as well to all the people helping us, pushing us, buying the releases and chatting to us. Churrrrrrrr...

One of the hardest working producers around, Legend4ry is known not only as a talented beatsmith but also as a tireless promoter of all that's positive in music. Striking a balance between a fierce sense of independence and a dedication to pushing good music to new ears his is an interesting take on what might loosely be called 'the music industry', and this is continuously reflected in his own tunes as he refuses to be boxed in by genre specifications and other industry terminology. The result is music filled with a striking sense of originality and a feel that is instantly recognisable as 'Legend4ry'. We caught up with him to talk about his approach to making beats, among other things, and got him to contribute the latest mix to our series.

Hedmuk: To introduce yourself, what's your name, where are you from and how would you describe your sound?

Legend4ry: I'm Chris Gallienne and I make music under the moniker of Legend4ry (as well as Lienne and JustAnotherAlias). I'm from Woolwich which is in the borough of Greenwich in South East London.

I would describe my sound as bass music with an emphasis on pads and percussion.

H: When did you start making beats? Had you made music in any other forms beforehand?

L: I started making music at around 14 or 15. I distintively remember having a copy of Ejay from a PC magazines demo CD which only had about 20 loops in it when I was around 10/11 which I used to drive everyone in my family bonkers with hearing the same stuff just moved around a little bit each time. Someone uninstalled it from the PC and took a key to the disc to deem it unuseable (harsh, I know! Still don't know who did it (laughs)). Other than that I had toyed with things like Music/Music2000 on the Playstation but didn't really 'get it' . I have always liked the idea of making music but never really pursued it until I was around people who felt the same way.

H: You've got huge variation in your productions, ranging from straight-up dubstep, to hip-hop to beats hanging around the 130bpm bracket: Is this something intentional, aimed perhaps at keeping your production fresh, or does it just happen for you? How do you balance all of it?

L: I start making music by finding a break, a sample or even a sound and find something which 'hits' me in a certain way (which is hard to explain) and sometimes I'll think "I need to go a bit hip hop with this" or "this would go well in a house tune" and then work from there.

95% of the time I will have the intention of making a dubstep track and if it starts to shape into something else then I will let it. I don't think its healthy to force a tune into being something it isn't. Even if I have never made that genre before I will always stick with an idea if it's solid. I am not afraid to make other genres, I think a lot of people give off that impression with their music, each tune just sounds like a re-hash of their last tune with a few set of drums: that doesn't interest me at all! I want to take music as far as I can as a person not genres.

This is what 'JustAnotherAlias' is all about, when I make music which isn't totally a "Legend4ry" track I put it into the JustAnotherAlias name so as not to stear one name in too many directions. I don't really push this alias as much as I should, with only one commerical release under that name and a recent self-released free EP called 'An Introduction'; a mix of house, dubstep, hiphop and triphop. On the whole, JustAnotherAlias is more of a personal project for now.

H: You also host your own radio show, Wednesd4ry: what was the original thinking behind the project? Have you any plans to expand it?

L: Wednesd4ry is primarily a vinyl-only radio show (with the addition of a CDJ if a guest brings it themself) broadcasted with video which is thrown every Wedneday with my best mates T4X and Chris Melo.

It started from me and T4X wanting to get on radio and we played on pirate station WaxFM after doing a one-off internet show and really enjoying it. We stopped broadcasting on Wax as it was cheaper to buy our own webhosting and stream it ourselfs pushing dubstep and we also do the odd hip hop set.

We recently revamped our website and hit our 50th show a few months ago which was a really big thing for us! We had a huge party with ballons to celebrate and got some of our past guest as well as other DJs to come down and play (the line up was Myself, T4X, Melo, Triggy, One-R and Focus).

Carrying on from that we now have a pretty solid regular fan base and will continue to be independent from any other radio show, having a one-off broadcast every Wednesday. We don't have to compete with DJs who played before us nor have any constrainsts on how long we can play or be told how to act when on air. I think this helps us do the best show we can, play what we feel like and just have a radio show which is a fun and interesting listen. I think a lot of radio shows these days are all about dubplates and are very formal, and that's not our cup of tea.

Legend4ry - A Journey Through Sound (DANK005) by Legend4ry

H: Some may also know you as one of the moderators of the Production forum on dubstepforum.com, how did you get involved with the guys who run the site and what were your motivations behind taking up the post?

L: I have always frequented dubstepforum, it has been one of my main sources of browsing on the internet for around 5 years now. When I got more into making music and wanting to better my music I pretty much 'lived' in the production area.

At around '09ish the production forum wasn't really moderated by any of the current mods and it was a death trap for anyone wanting to ask questions which have been asked before due to unhelpful members and no moderation. As a forum we nominated Shamanji to moderate the board, after a few months he went on tour with his partner (who together make up Sub Swara) and asked Dubway to add me as a mod temporarily while he was on tour. Long story short, Mr Shamanji is a busy man and had to step down as a mod so I became the dedicated moderator for the production forum. Now its run by myself, Pete Bubonic (aka forsaken/runs the Soul Motive label) and Wub, who is famously the funniest person on the forum (and probably the whole of the internet in my opinion).

Together we try and make it a place where you can get the help you deserve and we constantly add to the huge database of knowledge we call the 'Production Bible' which is a great resource for anyone wanting to get into making music.. It covers everything from making sounds to layering drums, mixing down and where to find the best and cheapest mastering all the way through to being an artist in this day and age. I think this is my motivation for moderating the board, I like the fact that I can hand pick discussions and add them to the Production Bible which helps people stick at making music; that is something I struggled with for a few years before I found my feet. Obviously I like the fact there's less spam and derailing of topics as it makes it a pleasant place to browse and to be part of it makes me happy in some way!

H: Tell us a bit about how you went about putting together your mix for us.

L: Honestly, I thought about a mix to show to off my DJing skills but then I thought that's a bit of boring: people can listen to my weekly show, or come see me out to hear how my DJing is. For this mix I picked tracks I am really feeling at the moment to create a interesting listening experience as opposed to something that needs all your attention. It goes from a mellow start to house pitched up to 140 and then to loads of my own tunes with the odd track by someone else. I took a really mellow approach with this mix, so pop it on when you're sitting on the train or having a nice lazy day; that's where it sounds best!

H: Finally, are there any forthcomings or anything in the pipeline that you'd like to put the word out on?

L: I'm playing the Audio Doughnuts first birthday on the 25th of this month. Don't forget to lock into my weekly radio show every Wednesday 8-10ish (pm) GMT at www.Wednesd4ry.com. My 'New Directions' EP recently got re-signed to Dubstrict Records after a bit of a ca-fuffle over which label is going to sign it, so that's good!

Since we got such positive feedback for our last collection of classic sets and mixtapes, we've decided to make it a semi-regular feature and will be posting old, and sometimes hard to find, mixes in slightly nostalgic bunches like this from time to time.

Radio 1's Essential Mix show has a simple formula, and that is to put some of the world's biggest DJs to the two-hour test and see what sort of a set they can come up with. Few Essential Mixes have retained as much legend in the UK's bass music scene as the dubstep and grime special hosted in 2006, which featured the newly-renamed Plastician, Digital Mystikz and Roll Deep taking shifts around the decks.

Exclusive: Goli & Ashburner - DEM / Faze 2 / Hedmuk Zip #1

Having put their formative imprint, For The Win, on hiatus for the past few months, Goli & Ashburner return with their latest project in the form of DEM Recordings. Backed by both Manchester-based agency Faze 2 and us here at Hedmuk, DEM is aimed at bridging the seemingly small, yet apparently huge, gap between grime and dubstep. Since taking on their own individual growth-spurts from the UK garage scene, the two have often been set in opposition with each other despite many of their obvious structural similarities. There have been attempts to draw the two together in the past, but with a somewhat inconsistent rate of success which has arguably and, at least in part, been down to the lack of a label aiming simply to bind the two together for a positive result: the hugely competitive market created by digital releases has meant that many labels are left trying to establish themselves as consistent houses for dubstep or grime, alongside a minority who are still willing to push the envelope to varying degrees of success.

Goli & Ashburner - Bullet by DEM Recordings

Thus DEM taps into an area that has perhaps been wrongly disregarded by labels in the past, not wanting to appear inconsistent in their brand development. With the simple goal, in their own words, of looking 'to bring a bit of bassweight to grime and experiment with how the two genres can work together', the duos approach is suitable to the task at hand; not wanting to try and define or mark something out before it has been created, the label presents an intriguing prospect and one which the many fans of both dubstep and grime have no doubt been waiting for. Dedication to the cross-pollination of the genres is the key here, and is something that DEM seeks to provide from the off.

Since dropping his debut 12" on Push & Run, Ifan Dafydd has been turning a few influential heads and with good reason: 'Miranda' comes on with the precise vocal chops of early James Blake material layered over warm basslines and panned-out clicks, snaps and drifting piano. The production is tight and leaves plenty of hard-working space to engage the listener. Whilst the James Blake comparison is the easy, and perhaps dangerously obvious, one to make there is an inherent originality to Dafydd's tunes which suggest that he will take the hard-to-pin-down sound in a fresh direction.

A duo who have quietly been building up a lot of support over the last half a year or so, My Nu Leng first came to our attention with the lurching 'Fireflies' as a standout track on Dr. Hugo's Exclusive Mix for us last May and since then have been impossible to pin down as they continually bring something fresh to the table with their beats. Switching with ease between a range of styles around the 130-140bpm mark, and with crisp production to boot, a strong garage influence underpins their sound without leading them down the (admittedly occasionally inviting) path of so many Burial-soundalikes. With a weekly show on Rood FM and close ties with Crises and MindStep Music, it seems that the My Nu Leng have built themselves a solid platform from which to take on 2012; we spoke to the pair about their approach to making tunes and got them to add the latest instalment to our mix series.

Hedmuk: As an introduction for those who may not know yet, what's your name, where are you from and how would you describe your sound?

James / Tommy: We are My Nu Leng and are a duo consisting of James Irving (Jammo) from Bristol and Tommy Jackson from London.

We like to write music covering a large spectrum of genres and styles, from garage to funky and from down-tempo to dubstep! Usually always fitting somewhere within the 130-140 BPM range. Our influences have worked well together and the more music we are making, the more we feel we are honing in on a particular sound.

H: How do you find producing as a duo, particularly considering the physical distance between yourselves?

J: We have managed to find a nice balance considering the distance at times but it can vary for each track. Before writing as a duo we both worked on our own individual music - to have another set of ears and eyes when it comes to production has really helped us strive to create music that (we hope!) is a little bit different, not sticking to certain barriers producers may be accustomed to in certain genres.

T: I personally prefer it, we only started making tunes together a short while before Jammo left the area for Uni, during which time we had sat down & made just a few tracks together. It works well in that one of us can work on something pretty much until hitting a block, then send the file to the other to have a crack at. It pretty much goes back & forth & changes the whole time until we're happy with what we've got.

H: Your beats take in a diverse range of sounds and styles including garage, uk funky, bassline and dubstep; is this something you have always set out to do or has it occurred more naturally?

J: It has definitely happened as a natural progression the more we produce together. The diversity of music we both listen to has always helped but the more new music we show each other, the more we seem to get blown away by the talent out there! And I think it is then about just striving to get even remotely near that level of production: one day!

T: Yeah definitely naturally, I know that when I've sat down with the idea of starting something of a certain style, it's always ended up completely different; for instance 'Fireflies' was originally a nice little garage-y number before Jammo put the b-line in it and it completely changed the tune! Between us we pretty much listen to anything, which I know is a bold statement & probably overused, but for example my missus' favourite kinds of music are people like Dean Martin, Edith Piaf, the blues etc. so that's always on in the gaff: it means there's always a different kind of idea there, it's just being able to get our ideas down, which we can't always do but that will come with time & learning, which we are still constantly doing.

H: There is a strong garage influence throughout your tunes; who are some of the artists that you draw inspiration from? Where, or from who, else do you take influence from when building beats?

J: We've both been pretty much obsessed with Burial & have been for years now. We put together our 'All Burial Mix' quite some time ago just for ourselves at the time, just so we would be able to listen to all of our favourite bits in one mix: we still love it just because it's a perfect collection of music!

T: Other artists include heads like Sully, Jamie xx, Phaeleh, Scuba, Dark Sky, Eleven8 etc., as well as a lot of old (proper) hip hop, drum & bass, grime & old school garage.

J: I also feel we've definitely got a lot inspiration from the other guys in the scene at the moment. There's a really strong community at the moment where a lot of people are doing big things & all seem to be kind of coming up together, everyone is pushing their own sound & doing it really well which just pushes us harder to be more productive. Guys like Versa & Rowl and the whole ICU lot, Percept, Anex, Majora (Bandicoot) are smashing it.

T: Mixing-wise, I'd rate Solitude & Oneman who, although are both at completely opposite ends of the spectrum, are both at the top of their game in what they do & always leave me feeling a little bit mind-blown (laughs)!

H: You recently released your debut EP (the 'Fireflies EP') through MindStep Music; how did this come about?

T & J: The release came about after one of our good mates Syte introduced us to Crises. We had put out a couple of free downloads & been sending stuff out for a bit, and we'd had a couple of responses, but MindStep just seemed like the perfect label to put out our first release on.

H: Tell us a little about how you went about putting together the mix you've done for us.

T: It's pretty much a collection of some of our favourite music & artists at the moment, as well as a chance to put out a few of our unheard tracks.

I basically made a playlist in my Serato a while ago & have been adding my favourite pieces of music for a while, then it was just a matter of having a couple of practice mixes to get a rough order & record it! There are a fair few Leng tunes in there, a couple of which, like 'Fireflies VIP', that pretty much no one has heard yet & 'Saviours' which is the first actual track we made together (laughs)!

Anyone who has heard our radio show on Rood FM (Saturday's 4-6) knows that we cover most genres within the show & it's always pretty fast-paced. I thought it was important to cover the majority of styles which we actually play out or on the radio so that people who have only heard a few of our tracks know what we cover!

H: Finally, is there anything forthcoming or in the pipeline that you'd like to put the word out on?

J: We have an EP forthcoming on Mindstep Music featuring 'Fireflies VIP' and 3 remixes of 'Fireflies' from Crises, Wonder and Tunnidge! We are just finalising our first vinyl release, which we are very excited about, and have remixes coming from J-One, Versa & Rowl and Demon as well as a few remix projects ourselves!

With the notable and relatively recent rise in popularity for the deeper end of the dubstep spectrum has come, of course, an increased demand for quality releases. With a small number of labels, such as Box Clever, MindStep and Deep Medi, currently working hard to meet these ever-increasing demands it seems that the time is ripe for a new, fresh label to join the ranks. With this comes the resurgence of Macabre Unit, a name that many will know for their influence in the grime scene some years ago. Headed up once more by Demon and this time coming back from a different, almost darker angle the label is set to hit a balance between digital and vinyl output that has been hard to master for many labels over recent years. We caught up with the man behind it all to find out a bit more about this new venture and managed to squeeze a free beat out of him as a little extra accompaniment to his addition to our exclusive mix series.

Hedmuk: To introduce yourself, what's your name, where do you come from and what is your label M.U.D all about?

Demon / M.U.D: Hi, I'm Raff Di Renzo (aka Demon), I'm currently based in Buckinghamshire, UK and M.U.D (Macabre Unit Digital) is my own imprint which has been set up to push the darker sound of Dubstep and remind people where it's really at.

H: With confirmed releases already from D-Cult, Biome, Versa and Catacombs the label is representing a fairly specific sound: how do you go about selecting tunes/artists to sign?

D/M: The music that I'm surrounded by right now is exactly the kind of stuff I've been in tune with for some years, having our two radio shows on Sub & Rood FM is a great way to test tracks out and get opinions and feedback for the artist, and I'm very broad minded when it comes to listening to tracks for playing on the radio: if I like it, I'll play it. However with the imprint it's different, if a track seems to have a bit of me living in it (in my head) then it's got my attention; I have a specific sound that attracts me and you can hear that in the tracks that are signed already and the mix that I've compiled for you guys. I think anyone who is running a label will tell you it's rare you 'um and ahh' about tracks to sign: it's an instant thing. As for signing artists, I dont really believe in it: being an artist myself I know how important it is for you to have the freedom to explore all avenues, and I'd feel like someone's dad if I signed them and they'd be hanging off my every word...I cant be arsed with that (laughs). Signing tracks and having a good ongoing business relationship with anyone involved with M.U.D is what it's about for me.

H: Tell us about your plans to run a vinyl imprint alongside the digital label. How important do you think it is for a label to have a physical arm in the music industry today?

D/M: Yes I'm planning on doing vinyl runs of all the digital releases I put out, my reasons for this are simple: people want vinyl, they want something they can have and can add to a physical collection, along with spinning it in true DJ fashion on a Technics 1210. Also I find many artists are much more willing to work with an imprint if there is a vinyl side to things, so yeah, in my honest opinion it is very important for a label to have a physical arm in the music industry.

H: Do you find it difficult balancing your commitments as a DJ, producer and label owner? Which would you consider yourself most strongly to be?

D/M: I find that all three of them coincide with each other: I DJ to promote the music I produce and sign and then I have the label which is the outlet for that material. I'd say, though, first and foremost I am a producer: that’s where the fire burns for me.

H: Many will know of Macabre Unit as a grime crew from Bedford: what became of this side of the collective, and will M.U.D be in any way connected to it?

D/M: The Unit as a grime collective broke down as life tookover, being a huge team and being so young we were always going to lose people along the way. We were all very young and we didn’t have a clue what life had in store for us, the whole grime thing was a blur to me (laughs), I didn’t even realise how big we were until it all blew over, if that makes sense. At times I look back now and I feel we didn’t embrace it enough, didn’t get the maximum out of what we had going on, but you know everything happens the way it happens for a reason: I probably wouldn’t be sitting here now writing this if it didn’t go how it did.

M.U.D is almost like a new turning of the leaf for the Unit musically , but we will always be known for our grime days, and people are right in expecting me to have MCs spraying bars for me over sets. And yeah, half-way through a dirty dubstep set, I'll switch to ‘Dem Na Ready’ or ‘Shootin' Stars’. I'd be crazy not to...

DCult - Particle M.U.D 001 Released 17.10.11 by macabreunitdigital

H: Take us through how you went about putting together the mix you've recorded for us.

D/M: I think as soon as we agreed I'd do this feature I already knew what artists I was gonna feature; all of these artists (excluding myself, 'cause I don’t want to sound like I'm blowing my own horn) are in their prime at the moment and they have so much material, but I chose the tracks that represent the sound that truly makes me tick.

H: Finally, is there anything forthcoming or in the pipeline that you'd like to put the word out on?

D/M: Yeah there is, of course there is: two M.U.D releases dropping together on the same day on the 17th of October (those releases consisting of D-Cult/Biome/Versa) we also have our Sub FM & Rood FM ICU & Macabre Unit shows that we do every other two week. There are a few other things in the pipeline, but they're a tad too far down the pipe to really mention right now...

Last of all, I would like to dedicate this feature & mix to my friend and fellow original Macabre Unit producer Fabio Cataldo, aka Blaze, who passed away very recently: you will never be forgotten, this one's for you bruv, all my love and rest in peace x.

With this EP following up from his huge 'Joke / Thinner' release on Skybrid Audio and the critically acclaimed Martyr EP, released earlier this year on Thelem's Orientis imprint, Coleco continues to carve a unique path through the arguably muddled world of bass music: combining genuine musicality with dubstep and breakbeat sensibilities, his productions carry a very particular, and instantly recognisable, edge and energy.

'President Tune' is driven by snappy breaks and a fainting synth while the bassline is plucked out beneath. With a slightly dark edge, the tune progresses through almost cinematic peaks and troughs before falling apart into echoes at its close.

Since appearing on the scene only a matter of months ago, Killawatt has had a presence that has been hard to ignore: with tunes being snapped up for release by almost every well-respected label around, he is soon to be boasting a very impressive back catalogue. With an incredible work-rate and level of productivity he has been quick to carve his own niche, producing a unique take on the rolling, techy dubstep sound.

With DJ support from the likes of Youngsta, N-Type, Distance, Skream and Benga he is certainly one to be keeping an eye on. We caught up with Killawatt to ask him some questions and he's also recorded a mix to take the #25 spot in our ever-growing series.

Hedmuk: For those who don't know, what's your name, where do you come from and how would you describe your sound?

Killawatt: I'm Matt Watt, aka Killawatt, and I'm from somewhere near Norwich in Norfolk. I've just moved back here since being at Uni in Guildford.

I'd describe my sound as a combination of tribal percussion, rolling subs and dark and cinematic ambiences (most of the time anyway!).

H: When did you start producing beats, and have you always made music of this style?

K: I can't really remember when it was exactly that I started making beats properly. I suppose I'd messed about on Reason when I was in 6th form about 5 years ago, but I never really knew what I was doing or what I wanted to do. It wasn't until my 2nd year of Uni, about 2 years ago, that I started producing seriously. I'd made a fair few old-skool-sounding jungle tunes the year before that, when I was involved with Satta Sounds, but that was never particularly challenging because of the fairly simple aesthetic of jungle.

My old housemate, Jack aka Ipman, got me into dubstep and started making very dubby sounding tunes inspired mainly by people like Radikal Guru, King Tubby, RSD, Scientist etc.; but that style is very limited so I took the darker, techier sound and it's all escalated quite rapidly from there.

H: You've very quickly established a name for yourself and have tunes signed to some of the most respected labels around (such as Wheel & Deal, Box Clever, Boka and Subway): how did this come about?

K: Well it all started with N-Type's initial support of the first darker tunes I wrote. I just sat down and told myself I was going to write a 4-track demo to send to labels, all based around a similar theme. I sent it to N-Type, he really liked 3 of the tracks on there ('Capa', 'Selenium' and 'Shakuhachi') and that was that. That really gave me the confidence to get on with promoting myself a bit more and also to write more tunes and develop my own style. I think the main key to securing all these signings is the amount of tunes I write: I don't really have anything else to do so producing is pretty much all I do.

I'm incredibly grateful for all these labels wanting to put my music out. If you'd asked me a few months ago if I thought it would be like this I would have just laughed at you, it's quite overwhelming how quickly it's all happened!

H: How does it feel to have the likes of N-Type, Skream and Benga playing your tunes on radio?

K: It feels incredibly satisfying. Getting plays on Radio 1 was especially satisfying since it was a complete surprise to me. I think it was Murky who told me about it: I probably wouldn't have known otherwise. I've got to thank J:Kenzo, Youngsta, Distance, T_!, Bunzero and Crises for further radio support as well!

H: With such a fast rise into the limelight, do you feel under pressure to keep upping your game?

K: Yeah I do but not from anybody else, only myself. I'm constantly pushing myself to write more and more stuff, if I go a week without finishing anything I feel like I'm slipping behind but then I have to make myself stop writing so I don't just run out of ideas and inspiration and get frustrated. I think it's natural for people to want to up their game all the time though really, especially if it's something that you want to take seriously as a career. I want to be able to produce for other artists and do soundtrack work in a few years time like Photek and Amon Tobin have done, and to be able to do that you have to really push yourself to learn all the time about different aspects of music and production and I see dubstep as my initial starting point. I do have to tell myself to be patient with it a lot of the time because I want to be able to do that now, but I've only really been producing for a couple of years and those guys have probably been at it since before it was born!

H: How did you go about putting together the mix you've done for us?

K: I've been wanting to do a mix purely consisting of my own stuff for a while, but I've never had enough tunes that I was confident about playing out or including in mixes. Now I have enough tunes to do this. I also wanted to represent Ipman's tunes because I think he's a sick producer and needs some more airtime. There's our collabs in there and a couple of collabs I've done with Thelem also. I'm hoping it'll give people a good idea of what my sound is and show that I like to change things up a bit too.

H: Finally, are there any other forthcomings or anything else you'd like to put the word out about?

K: We've just finished collating my 2nd Wheel & Deal release, which I'm excited about! I also have finalised forthcoming releases on New Moon ('Reason To Worry', 'Swarf', 'Too Dark'), Loft Party Records ('Interplay' and 'Binary'), Box Clever ('Mantra' and 'Schitzophonia'), BLKBXXX ('Sidewinder' and 'Sidewinder (Ipman Remix)'), 'Xibalba' is the B-side to Ipman's Boka release, Subway Digital ('Critters' and 'Floating Weight'), 'Conflict' is due out on a Requiem Audio 12" with a DJ Madd and Matt-U tune and I should have another batch of 12" releases to announce in the next couple of months too so watch out for them.

Should also have a few collaborations with the likes of Biome, Matt-U and Phaeleh hitting the airwaves very soon, as well as a few remixes. Going to be remixing Radikal Guru for his album remix EP due out on Moonshine in January too which is quite a personal thing for me as he was the one that really hooked me into dubstep!

Big ups to everyone who's supported my music over the last few months, it would be hard to keep making it without that support!

Dizzee Rascal makes an appearance on Kool FM (a London pirate that was key in the development of the jungle scene, and not to be confused with Northern Ireland's Cool FM) and switches from his usual grimey flow to jump on a Ruff Stuff jungle set and Skibadee's reaction is enough confirmation of his cross-genre abilities.

Since featuring Thelem back in March, the up-and-coming producer has remained a firm favourite of ours and is certainly someone whose tight-as-you-like production is being pinned by us as one to watch.

As seems to be the done thing at the moment, Thelem has chosen to celebrate his gaining 500 followers on Facebook by giving away a tune to his supporters. 'Machine City' carries the usual weight that is to be expected from the man's productions and pairs it with some menacing midrange rolling in over the top to produce a dark atmosphere around the tune.

American dubstep, on the whole, has long been sneered at by fans of the deep, dark, bass heavy-sound who have associated the U.S with screeching, mid-range wobble and not too successful dubstep hip-hop hybrids. Yet ARNOK, AKA Aaron Bones, continues to show that any negative conceptions of Dubstep from across the pond are unjustified. His nascent imprint SUB LAB is dedicated to pushing deep, dark beats from up and coming producers and his own production, both his solo work and his work with HEX under the Infinite Minds alias, fits comfortably alongside the producers he chooses to support. We finally caught up with the elusive Aaron (this feature has been along time in the making) to ask a few questions and get his contribution to our mix series.

Hedmuk: For those who don't know, what's your name, where do you hail from and what is your label SUB LAB all about?

ARNOK: My name is Aaron Bones and I 'hail' from the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, but recently I've relocated to the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains (Boulder, Colorado).

SUB LAB was born in Dallas, Texas - very far from the South London borough which introduced the deepest of 'dubstep' sounds to the world, but very near to its collective ideals. With the goal of utilizing the full capabilities of creativity and building a vibrant community around it, we are in constant motion beyond explored boundaries.

As contemporary music progresses toward categorization and building stiff scenes, we remain in active pursuit of pushing the Sub Lab vibes without compromising our commitment to the underground. Surfacing the power of unknown sounds and the collective minds that produce them is our motivation each and every day.

SUB LAB isn't grounded in music or the releases it's featured on -- we are not limited to any one field and seek to test the limits of every idea that comes our way.

H: You seem to be taking an original approach to running a label by connecting and collaborating with a wide number and range of other people involved in the scene (be they promoters, producers, DJs, writers or other labels) in order to spread something positive, rather than simply using this communication as a promotional tool; is this an important part of Sub Lab?

This is probably the most vital aspect of the label. Sub Lab would not function without the continuous efforts of our network - daily interaction between artists, promoters, businesses, and friends. There are many others out there on a similar wave-length, and I want to utilize the power of creative collaboration as much as possible. Without my efforts of reaching out to others who inspire me, I would not have accomplished a fraction of what I have to date.

By the end of the day, there's around 40-70 IM boxes open between AIM and Facebook chat on this laptop. I definitely cherish having the power of being able to connect instantly with others across the globe. None of this would be possible without today's technology, and that's something I feel all of us tend to overlook from time to time. But, as convenient and useful these tools are, I personally wouldn't be tied into social networks anymore if it weren't for my creative endeavors. Sometimes I just want to enjoy other aspects of life -- such as the mountains outside my window, rather than being instantly-available for anyone's convenience.

H: How do you go about selecting artists and tunes for release on the label? And do you have an email address (or other contact detail) for demo submissions?

A: Since the beginning, I've always selected tunes that purely have an impact on me. I'm not the one who waits for others to send me demos - it's all about chasing the opportunity. Recently, I've decided to close the doors of public demo submissions. There are a handful of reasons behind this, but mainly it's because I'm comfortable with the level we're at.

I've been able to establish some very strong relationships with other like-minded artists -- to the point in which I can call them my friends. Taking the time to connect with these artists has lead to me gaining levels of respect which I embrace deeply. Whether it's them sending me their latest productions before anyone else, or building something specifically for SUB LAB. Just having that kind of relationship means more than any amount of words could describe.

This doesn't mean I'm closed-minded towards new additions to at all. We've made this decision as whole and feel it will allow us to focus on other aspects of the label that need more attention. Sifting through SoundCloud links, mixes, and zip files full of unfinished tunes doesn't seem necessary to me anymore. I feel pretty disrespected when I open an email just to find a link without any words. The ones who truly are interested in what we're doing and wish to get involved will go out of their way to make it happen.

H: With the apparent ease of setting up digital labels in this day and age, is it important to you that you will provide physical releases as well?

A: Definitely, pushing physical releases to our audience is vital to what we're doing. I want others to have a complete understanding of our motives, and to do that, we can't rely purely on the internet. It's all about giving the listener an experience that defines who you are -- showing them, not just telling them. You can compare it to going out and feeling sub-woofers pound your chest in, rather than sitting at home, listening to the selected range of frequencies that can travel through your laptop speakers.

I'm not going to force anyone to buy our releases on vinyl because it's what we prefer, but I want them to have the option if they want to. Some people like to be able to pull out their iPhone's and purchase a song through iTunes at any given time, and some people enjoy traveling to their local record store so they pull that new release off the shelf. If someone is going to put their money towards our efforts, I want them to have complete satisfaction of knowing their purchase was worth it. SUB LAB will always remain committed to quality in every aspect of our operations, period.

H: America's take on dubstep has the, perhaps unfair, reputation of being focussed on jump-up and dancefloor-projected tunes; has this at all influenced the way in which you set about establishing SUB LAB as both a label and collective?

A: I've always put forth an effort to set myself a part and do things differently I guess you could say. Setting up the label as a collective was driven by my desire to utilize the power of creative collaboration between like-minded artists. I knew right from the start that I didn't want just to be another record label; I wanted to take a different route and experiment with all the ideas in my head. One of my biggest influences is the power that all these underground producers hold. Getting to see first-hand how these hidden sounds transform drives me to raise the bar in the perspective of both a creative director and artist.

The sounds that have been associated with 'the scene' over here may not be favored on my behalf, and we may not 'fit in' with everyone else, but I'm doing what I love and enjoying every moment of it. Watching others appreciate what we're doing pushes me harder to stay true, disregard what's trending, and continue doing things our way. The support we've been receiving since last September is truly incredible - it's definitely a huge influence for all of us. Gaining respect from heads throughout 'the scene' that I greatly admire is one of the main sources of my inspiration. Youngsta, Tunnidge, Joe Nice, and Seven especially have kept me moving forward with great force.

H: You're also a producer yourself, both individually as ARNOK and in collaboration with HEX as Infinite Minds: how would you describe your sound, and what have you got lined up for the future with these projects?

A: I guess 'my sound' is "next level ambiance'" according to AJP UK (laughs). In all seriousness, I couldn't describe it even if my life was on the line. My sound is what you hear and what it tells you. It's been pretty hard for me to set time aside to work on my tunes; there are about 10 projects from myself that I need to finish up. 'Bare Beliefs' was supposed to see a release, but silly me forgot to save the project file. I decided to give away a rough copy on The Big Up Mag the other month.

As far as Infinite Minds, HEX and I were able to get a few studio sessions in before I left for Colorado. We're working on our debut 12" which you'll see on Sub Lab sometime next year.

H: How do you balance this with the running of Sub Lab? Do you view yourself more predominantly as a label owner or producer?

Between my day job and running the label, there isn't much time left for me to produce. Most of it is spent networking and the time zone differences are always shifting my pathetic excuse for a sleep schedule. I couldn't tell you how many times I've gone to bed at sunrise. Right now, my focus is purely on the label, so I guess you could say I'm on a hiatus from producing. At the end of the day, the last thing I want is a title associated with my name. Rarely do I go around praising myself as a 'producer' or 'label owner' ('DJ' is by far my least favourite). I enjoy just simply being myself.

H: Can you tell us a bit about the mix you've prepared for us?

A: Hah, where do I begin? This mix has undergone multiple phases since the time you two first asked me to do a feature. I've stressed so much to create a pure representation of not only myself, but the label through a journey of sounds. Four months and ten versions later, I finally recorded something I'm comfortable with. Being that this will be my only (online) mix for 2011, I wanted to make sure it was exactly what I wanted. Spanning forthcoming material, a handful of my favorites, and some goodies from my friends -- this mix accuretely represents what I do and the essence of my label.

H: Finally, is there anything forthcoming or in the pipeline that you'd like to put the word out on?

A: There's always something in the pipeline...

Feature No.23 comes from an increasingly popular producer whose tight production and menacing basslines have seen continued airplay on Rinse and sustained support from some of the biggest DJ's in the scene. Shredexx combines a multitude of influences taken from his time living in cities around the world - notably Berlin and London - to build beats of real originality and quality wrought with sinister synths and powerful drums. With his recent E.P recieving positive reviews and support from the likes of Distance we caught up with Shredexx to ask a few questions and get his contribution to our expanding mix series.

HEDMUK: As an introduction, what's your name, where do you come from and how would you describe your sound?

Shredexx: I'm Shredexx, I'm a 22 year old producer originally from Hamburg, Germany but have lived in London, Australia and Germany intermittently over the last few years. My sound is probably best described as dark electronic music. I like to draw influences from techno, dubstep, drum n' bass and electronica and i spread those influences over various projects I do - with Shredexx my footing is firmly in dubstep.

H: What is it about darker, deeper music that appeals to you? How did you get in to creating this kind of music?

I think as your music taste develops; you're constantly looking for things which excite you, and the deeper, darker side of this sound really hit a note with me while i was studying in London. It was something that probably could never have captivated me as much as it did if i wasn't there. I remember the first club night i went to when I got to London was FWD and I knew straight away that I'd walked in to something special. I went to school in Sydney, Australia, and the club scene there was so under developed and it largely still is. But London's was thriving when I got there and it was such a pleasure to get in to when I did. Its such a familiar tale amongst dubstep producers; but thats one of the things I like about it. There's these sorts of cornerstones that have become a language to so many… you know, FWD, DMZ etc.

H: How do you go about building your beats? Do you have a set pattern of production?

S: Its always changing to be honest; so you go through periods of having certain methods, then after a few days, weeks or months you tend to switch it up a little bit. That way you constantly learn new things and keep your production moving forward and fresh. I can say that the way i used to make beats a few years back is completely different to the way I do it now.Generally speaking, you get a little idea in your head, whether its something you thought of, heard or just think would sound good and you start there. It could be a baseline, a sound or a drum beat; and what usually makes the cut is for further work is when its good. If thats the case, you keep going and build layer after layer until you've got something strong that you can visualise working in a club or a mix or something. I guess thats the thing about club music - it has to work on the dancefloor and a lot of the time; thats my goal.

H: How much of an influence is living in Berlin/Germany on your music? Do you pick up sounds and influences from the local scene?

S: Well Berlin is a special place. The main language there is techno, and thats something that really rubs off. I remember when i was 12 or 13 I thought techno was some kind of joke… repetitive beats, next to nothing happening, nothing memorable. But over time i realised I couldn't have been more wrong. Its a music that thrives on grooves and instantaneous feeling rather than what you might expect from 'dance' music (I hate that term). It can be big without being loud, and can be really rhythmic without too much going on. But location is an interesting thing, because it definitely dictates a large part of your thought processes as far as what you build goes. London was seminal for me as it started and helped me cultivate my interest in dubstep. When I moved back to Australia it allowed me to take a step back and focus on what I liked about the London sound and really develop a little bit more independently. Especially because there were big shifts over the last few years that i wasn't necessarily as excited about as what I first heard. Berlin will be another chapter that im really looking forward to reading in to more and more as time goes on.

H: You've been getting alot of love from Distance. How does it feel to be supported by one of the biggest names in Dubstep?

S: It's really really flattering. Distance was one of the guys whose tracks I heard and really felt wowed by, and I still do. His Rinse show has really become something special over the years. He's championed some really important people, in this sound and in many others. I think he was even the first person to play one of the tracks off James Blakes' first release. It's so important to get support, not just from the big names, but from everyone, because the life of making beats is pretty solitary these days. You don't need to go out spreading your music on records or cd's anymore so a lot of the personal connections have dissipated. You make the beats alone in your bedroom, so if you're not sending your music out to people, no one will ever hear it except maybe your close friends and neighbours.Having Distance play my tracks is a big confirmation, and on top of that things like that really fuel a desire to keep going and keep on building; because thats what its ultimately about: Building beats, enjoying that and then showering down a club with them.

H: With your recent E.P getting positive reviews, we wondered what your musical goal was. A release on Chestplate has got to be right up there?

S: I think something like that is still a long way off. But it would obviously be a dream come true for me, as Distance really is an influence and a tastemaker for me. But yeah, a release on Chestplate is definitely something I aspire to, their output has been so consistent over the years and it would be an absolute honour.As far as musical goals go, I rarely make a beat where I sit back and am completely happy with it. I have this conversation with a lot of people who produce these days. I think even a few years ago, when a lot of dubstep DJ's were still using vinyl and you had to get a plate cut to get your beat in their bags it was different, because no one is willing to shell out cash to get a half-done beat cut to dub. But now its flipped; CD's have really opened things up for producers, for better or worse.. because you kind of get lazy knowing someone can just burn this on to a CD and hit play. That's another one of my musical goals I guess, just to carry on making beats and making sure they continue to improve.

H: Tell us a bit about the mix you've put together for us.

S: I always find doing mixes quite difficult. Is it a matter of trying to show people your own new stuff? or should you be going in trying to just put together an hour of quality beats? I think its a mixture of the two, but certainly leaning towards the latter. So I guess the mix is a bit of a statement from me as to where I'm at and what I'm doing, and at the same time just some beats that im into at the moment. Theres a lot of stuff from producers im in contact with and feeling at the moment so i hope its the same for you!

H; Finally, are there any forthcomings or projects in the pipeline that you want to put the word out about?

S: At this stage Im really enjoying making beats. More than ever i guess, so I just want to keep on doing that! Theres a lot in the pipeline, but nothing set in stone just yet. At the moment whats most important to me is that I keep on developing in what I like doing. Making beats and more beats. But don't worry, I hopefully wont be quiet for long.

With a varying style of production ranging from a more aggressive, club orientated approach to a stripped back half-step sound Benton has slowly built an impressive repertoire of quality beats sure to please a wide spectrum of bass heads. Support for his deeper bits continues to come from no less than DJ Youngsta alongside N-Type, Hatcha and other big names whilst labels have been busy signing up a number of his tunes for future release. With a Debut LP in the works Benton has found the time to record a mix (3 deck business) for our feature series and answer a few of our questions.

Hedmuk: As an introduction, what's your name, where do you come from and how would you describe your sound?

Benton: I'm Benton, I live in South just out of London. I suppose I would describe it as a deep bass driven half-step electronic sound.

H: How long have you been making beats? How did you get into it?

B: I've been making beats since about 2007 but back then I was only fucking about. I think I've been making music seriously since I made the original have it your way and heard it played out by Unitz. I got into making music through my mate Sam (Arc-88). He had a mac so when I was about 16 I used to sit there when he'd go out and fuck around making some sounds but I had no idea what I was doing. Then he introduced me to unitz one day and he pretty much taught me about putting sounds together!

H: You first caught our, and others', attention with a more aggressive, dancefloor-projected style but have recently been coming with more deep, half-step vibes: do you usually have a few different projects on the go or do you move more transitionally through making different styles?

B: Yeah I mean I've always written different kind of styles it depends on what mood I'm in. I used to sit around and just make crazy bass sounds all day then realised that the drums where the harder thing to get right, when I'd sit down and write a drum pattern it would always end up being a deep rolling kinda vibe. I still make tear out stuff, I try not to stick to one style because I'll just end up boring myself!

H: Does this diversity with the tunes you make encompass a wide array of influences? Are your influences mainly musical, or do you take inspiration from other things aswell?

B: There is so much music being sent around and so many people producing these days it's hard to not be influenced by what you hear. Everyone's got something in their music thats inspirational. The tune doesn't even have to be good but I can guarantee that there is an element of the tune that's inspirational. Other than music i get inspired by general life-the further away from my computer I get the more I want to make a tune.

H: You've collaborated with Unitz and your refix of Goli & Ashburner's 'Field Of Vibrations' has gained a lot of attention: do you enjoy working alongside other artists in this way, and is it something you plan on continuing with?

B: Yeah I enjoy collaborations sometimes but I prefer doing remixes for people! I like working with vocals so if there's a sample like in the F.O.V remix I'll give it ago

H: With an album already in the making after relatively few, although well-received, releases, do you feel that there is a lot of pressure on you to deliver?

B: Hell yes! But you know I got thrown in at the deep end and there was a time a few months ago I was a bit like 'ahh' I gotta write this thing! but now I'm just chillin making some beats and gonna try piece them together soon and see what happens!

H: Take us through how you went about putting together your mix for us.

B: Hold up let me put it on...

Well there's been so much good dark music out recently. I hear so much shit everyday like the scenes shit, it's dying, etc but if you dig a little deeper you'll find that it's still going strong and in my opinion as long as people keep doing what they are doing and ignore whatever hypes going on around them they will realise that it's all good. So this mix is pretty much deepness from start to finish which is rare for me to do but I enjoyed it.

H: Finally, are there any forthcomings or anything in the pipeline that you want to put the word out on?

Tunnidge needs little introduction: one of the few producers to have two releases on the seminal Deep Medi imprint, the first to be signed to Chestplate Records following Distance's expansion of the label and co-owner of Origin Audio alongside Cyrus. With regular appearances on Get Darker as well a full and busy bookings schedule - which will take him to the states this Autumn - Tunnidge is somewhat of a looming figure on the Dubstep scene. Able to build both powerful, tear-out tunes popular in the club environment as well as darker, more contemplative production, his beats often tread the surprisingly fine line between Jump-up and deep relaying a real sense of momentum to any listener. Tunnidge has contributed the 21st mix in our ever-expanding feature series as well as finding the time to answer a few of our questions. Enjoi:

Hedmuk: To introduce yourself to those who may not yet be familiar, what's your name, where do you hail from and how would you describe your sound?

Tunnidge: I Produce and DJ under the name Tunnidge, I grew up on the outskirts of South East London I suppose you could describe my sound as dark and raw dubstep. I try and walk the line between depth and dance floor.

H: Are you from a musical background, or was it something that you picked up yourself? How did you get into making beats?

T: No I'm not form a musical background, music production is something that is very instinctive for me. I always listened to dance music so found the process of production and structuring very intuitive. I suppose years of listening and going to raves helped me gain a sense of what in my opinion works on a dance floor. I got in to making beats mainly from having friends that were making music. I was always awash with ideas and so it was just a process of learning what I could from tutorials and asking questions. People such as Rob Sparx, Slack, Cyrus and Distance have always been massively helpful, but I think as most producers will tell you, you end up developing processes that work for you. It’s always interesting finding out how other producers work and what their processes are, it’s good to be in a constant state of discovery.

H: Your tunes seem to hit the middle ground between the sort of deep rollers made by Cyrus and the tightly aggressive style of Distance; do you tend to make beats with a club/dance situation in mind?

T: Everything I build is built for a Sound System, so yes I suppose it is all pretty much aimed at a dance floor. However in a dance situation I am not always looking to just have that bass face moment, it’s good to make something deeper and perhaps take the music to another place this also helps heighten the intensity when it’s time to bang out. I seem to have subconsciously developed a production technique where I make one tune for the dance floor and one tune for me. This is something I try and reflect in my releases.

TUNNIDGE Dark Skies by Tunnidge

H: With producers like Pinch and Cyrus recently branching out and making beats nearer the 130BPM mark, have you been experimenting with other styles and speeds at all?

T: Yes I actually have a whole heap of stuff around the 130bpm mark. I think its great to try your hand at different genres, you learn so much and also in can revitalise your approach to your chosen field. Every time I go to Loefah’s he plays me loads of forthcoming Swamp81 bits, and his passion for it is quite infectious so I usually end up going back to the studio and knocking out some beats on this vibe. At the same time I think Dubstep as a genre has so much still to offer, the media attention and money have kind of stifled the creativity that was about a few years ago, but like all art forms the pendulum will swing back, and I’m excited to see where it takes us.

H: Despite the internet playing such a big part in the expansion of dubstep as a sound and genre, a lot is still made of its actual geographical origins in Croydon; as someone from the area in which Dubstep was 'born', how important a role do you think location played in the creation of the sound?

T: Where I am from is maybe 20 minutes from Croydon so im not sure how well I am equipped to answer this, also when the sound was really developing I was living in a totally different part of the country. So it’s not like I was about when Myztiks, Loefah, Hatcha, Cyrus, Artwork, Benny Ill, Benga and Skream were really starting to push things in Big Apple . My point of contact was Mala who would play me all the beats send me CD’s etc. So I heard it develop from a distance rather than in the physical environment of Croydon.

From a speculative point of view I can comment on how Croydon is viewed and what the people I knew in the scene were like in the early years? Croydon was always a bit of a cultural void, it was often viewed as a bit naff and you never had to look too far for a fight, same as it is now really! It always makes me laugh when I hear people making a “Dubstep pilgrimage” to Croydon! Bizarre. Then again maybe that’s it, perhaps that lack of anything of cultural substance combined with a few dynamic personalities was the catalyst of the musics development and ethos. I knew Mala, Coki, Loefah, and Poax and they always had a very interesting dynamic within their friendship. It’s weird when you know a group of people as mates that have been such huge factors in the development a whole new genre. So without going to deep I think we have to refer to the old adage “nature abhors a vacuum.”

H: Aside from your music, the artwork that you do for the Deep Medi releases has become iconic within the dubstep scene: where did the idea for these designs come from?

T: The idea for portraits of the producers was Mala’s, the style of the Medi heads is just my drawing style, that it really. It’s great that people mention them as “iconic” I feel very honoured to have been part of the deep Medi history and identity.

H: The label you run with Cyrus, Origin Audio, went quiet after the announcement of a forthcoming Commodo 12": does the upcoming charity release of your remix of Truth's 'Puppets' mean you intend to keep the label going?

T: Yes Origin Audio will be continuing to release, but we are in no rush to churn out release after release. We are happy to wait and release music that we believe in, the market is so saturated at the moment we think it’s important to put out the best music we can rather than a vast schedule of forgettable music. Origin Audio 003 will be getting mastered very soon, so hold tight for that.

H: Finally, are there any forthcomings or projects in the pipeline that you want to put the word out about?

T: Yes I have a forthcoming release on the Getdarker label , two tunes “Decay” and “Control” will make up GetDarker002. Also you can hear some of my tunes on the forthcoming “Dubstep Allstars 8” mixed by Distance. More releases on Chestplate and Deep Medi as well as some releases on less expected but equally big labels, so I’m very happy. There is also one very big project in the pipeworks which I am very excited about, can’t say anything at the moment, but I feel like it will change a lot of things in the dubstep world. Stand by. Also I will be hitting the states for the first time in September so im really looking forward to playing out there!

A somewhat typical Truth production, with heavy kicks and an ample dose of interchanging mid-range frequencies and echoing samples, this is destined to break up rooms of half-step moodiness this summer with a sense of controlled aggression similar to that harnessed by the likes of Tunnidge or Distance.

As seems to be something of trend at the moment, Shredexx has celebrated reaching 100 followers on his Facebook page by giving away a free tune. After recently breaking into a lot of new listeners' ears with his tightly-crafted 'Silence EP' on Subdepth and through consistent airplay from the likes of Distance on Rinse the future is looking bright for the young German producer. This beat, however, is quite the opposite of bright as sliding, industrial synths establish a dank groove around light percussion and a whispered sample.

Our 20th feature comes from frontiers not normally associated with the deeper, darker bass sound - Turkey - and is an example of the ever-growing popularity, skill and variation within the dubstep scene. Gantz is one of a few Turkish producers pushing the darker bass sound: focusing on creating a strong beat he skillfully and originally builds forward moving tunes, heavy in percussive elements, which relay a real sense of energy to the listener. With a recent EP on Fent Plates Records we caught up with Gantz to get a sense of his influences and to hear his future plans. In addition Gantz has put together a deep mix showcasing his own sounds as well as similar producers. Enjoi:

Hedmuk: As an introduction, what’s your name, where are you from and how would you describe your sound?

Gantz: I'm Emir, from Istanbul, I like to explore bass and rhythm-oriented electronic music.

H: How did you get in to making beats? Are you from a musical background or is it something you picked up yourself?

G: It slowly started to take over as I got bored of my instruments. I'd been playing my instruments since I was about 13 or something...

H: How did you get in to the darker, deep bass sound?

G: I remember my ex-girlfriend playing me a Loefah tune, and a while later my mate (who produces as Unaware) introduced me to the sound properly.

H: Where do you draw your influences from, and are they mainly musical or do you take ideas from other things as well?

G: Musically, I guess more of the half-steppers got me excited; but you don't even know where you get your influences from do you (laughs).

H: Your beats are full of atmosphere with subtle background sounds and layered textures: is the feeling and atmosphere behind a tune particularly important to you?

G: I can't say it is really, I pay more attention to the beat: I try to make it groove and try to create an overall expression. I've never thought that much about the atmosphere, maybe I do but I am unaware of that.

H: What’s the bass music scene like in Turkey? How popular is the darker, sub-heavy sound?

G: We have the 'bass scene', but the darker sound is really not that popular.

H: Are there many producers making beats on a similar tip as yourself? And are there any nights pushing this kind of sound?

G: Yeah, Unaware is the guy to watch out for, Depthcharge is pushing his own thing we also have Flatliners. Those are just the guys I'm familiar with, but I'm sure there is a lot more. There are nights that are pushing dubstep, but you don't get much variety here. It's all happening in Pixie Underground: that's the place.

H: Tell us a bit about the mix you’ve put together for us.

G: I suppose I just tried to express what I'm about recently...

H: Finally, you got any forthcomings or future plans you’d like to share with us?

G: Yeah, I have a forthcoming release on Sub Lab, nothing else for now. It's not that easy to get in touch with people when you live in Istanbul: you don't get the chance to actually meet people. Hopefully I will continue building tunes.

A tune that's become something of an anthem over the last year or so, Benga's 'Smack Your Bitch Up' will be familiar as the lurching opener to his set's alongside Skream. Having promised a free giveaway some time ago, it comes as something of a surprise that a beat which was expected to receive a full release has been put up for free download but it may equally be taken as a positive sign as to the level of quality to expect from Benga's forthcoming album. In this way, the tune fulfils its assumed role as a statement track: a big set-opener that has stood the test of time, a re-appropriation of an already-established dance anthem and a preview of what to expect to an important post-fame follow-up album.

Karma is a rising talent we've had our eye on for a while here at Hedmuk as he brings something genuinely unique to the table in terms of his production. With a background in making hip-hop beats and drawing influence from a wide spectrum of bass-led music, Karma blends laid-back melodies with carefully constructed, weighty basslines and tight rhythms to make music equally at home in headphones as on a big club system. We caught up with him for an interview to discuss all of this, aswell as his recent move in signing to MindStep Music and got him to put down a mix for our ever-expanding series.

Hedmuk: To introduce yourself, what's your name, where are you from and how would you describe your sound?

K: Hi, I'm Corin (AKA Karma), and im from Penge, South-East London. I would describe my sound as sub-heavy bass music ranging between 130-150Bpm. I try to make captivating music, which could go off in a club, or be listened to at home.

H: Are you from a musical background, or is it something that you have picked up yourself?

K: Fairly, I've always been fascinated by music from a young age and I've been playing the drums for about 8 years now. My granddad worked for UNESCO back in the day, recording tribal music around the world, and he left me a huge archive of records he recorded which I've made much use of in my music since.

H: Where, or from whom, do you take your influence when it comes to making a tune?

K: Alot from Dub/Reggae, which was sort of my gateway into Dubstep at first, but also Jungle, and 90's Hip-Hop. The thing is, I find inspiration comes from everywhere, not just music. It can come from the city I live in, the places I go, people I meet, even the colour of the sky!

H: Does being from London, the city responsible for such an influence on the dubstep sound, bear a particular significance to you in terms of the music you make?

K: Most definitely. London is without a doubt the central hub for almost all genres of dance music which have influenced and helped create what Dubstep is today, from Acid House, to Jungle, to Garage. London therefore has that atmosphere/energy to it. I admire the evolution and roots of these genres, which I try to incorporate into my music, so that whatever you're into you can find that little hint of Jungle or Garage, or whatever may suit you.

H: You've recently signed to MindStep Music: how did that come about?

K: Well, I'd been making music for roughly 5 years and was getting really frustrated just sitting on tracks, so I started sending them out to people. It was hard getting noticed at first, Crises was one of the first DJs who took an interest. I then bumped into him down at FWD>> one time, and we got chatting about where we could go from there. I kept sending him tunes after that, and well.. here we are now!

H: You make a wide variety of beats, taking in hip hop and some grime: is this something that comes naturally? Do you plan to work with vocal artists in the future at all?

K: I used to make Hip-Hop before, so have worked with quite a few vocalists/MCs in the past. At this stage, with the music I'm making, and pushing, I'd like to keep things instrumental but I do have plans and ideas for the near future to work with vocalists, but not just yet.

H: Tell us a little about how you went about putting together the mix you've done for us.

K: The mix I've recorded is sort of a showcase of my interpretation of the sound. Plenty of dubs from myself and a few other artists who I feel are pushing a similar sound, and have a similar perception of the genre.

H: Finally, is there anything forthcoming or in the pipeline that you'd like to put the word out on?

K: I have a forthcoming EP on Mindstep. No dates yet, but keep a look out!
