Featuring: Killa & Instinct

With 'Haterz' featuring on Get Darker's recent This Is Dubstep Vol.3 compilation, many will be aware of Killa & Instinct. The production duo's brand of fierce, brooding beats have won them the support of some of the scene's biggest names, with perhaps the most significant being that of Cyrus and Tunnidge who recently added the pair to their Origin Audio imprint. Both Killa & Instinct have put together an exclusive mix for us showcasing their sound and that off producers making tunes in a vein similar to theirs, as well as taking the time to answer a few of our questions. This one's big: enjoy.

Hedmuk: Just as an introduction, what names do you both write under, when did you start to make beats and how would you describe your sound?

Killa & Instinct: We both write under the Killa & Instinct name but we do make some solo projects where we go under our individual names. We both played around with beats when we where younger but started taking making music seriously in 2008. We would describe our sound as deep, dark & minimal.

H: In past interviews you’ve mentioned the influence of people from Guernsey in shaping your musical direction. Who has influenced both of you in taking up music production and who continues to shape and affect the beats you make?

K&I: No one in particular spurred us on to start producing music. We both were DJ's for a long time before we started producing but it was more of a natural progression to make our own beats. Some life experiences in Guernsey had shaped a few of our tunes. For instance Haterz(which featured on Get Darker's This is Dubstep: Vol.3 compilation) was definitely shaped by our mood at the time.

H: Did being, for want of a better word, isolated from London affect your response to Dubstep? Was it harder to find and listen to? If so, did it enhance it's appeal?

K&I: It was hard for us to go to nights unless we hosted them ourselves or flew to London for the weekend and go to places like FWD. It wasn't hard keeping up to date with the music as we both found ourselfs listening to pirate shows on Rinse FM, React FM and downloading sets from Barefiles. We were also strongly influenced by a friend up in Leeds who used to send Killa mix CD's.

H: You set up Guernsey’s first Dubstep and Bass Music night in 2007. Having had Youngsta andChefal play out on the island, is it safe to assume it’s been successful?

K&I: The nights where really successful it gave Dubstep a strong base on the island but due to closures of clubs we had to take up a smaller residency where bringing artists over was no longer ideal. We still maintained a good vibe at the smaller scale nights with local DJ's. This was a shaping factor in our move to Bristol, there is such a good scene with many nights to get involved in.

H: Production duos have found success in Dubstep, perhaps most notably with DMZ. How does working as a pair affect your production? Is it advantageous?

K&I: Yeah it definitely helped us, especially coming from a small island with no one to show you how to use our software. We both push each other to get the best possible sound out of our tracks, bouncing ideas of each other. Two heads are better than one.

H: How did your involvement with Origin Audio come about?

K&I: We both started sending our tracks to Cyrus simply asking him his views on them. He asked us to keep sending our tunes to him. This made us knuckle down more on making beats. When we sent him H2O he told us he was starting a new Label with Tunnidge to promote the deeper side of Dubstep which wasn't being represented very well at the time.

H: Your dark, sub-driven beats fit perfectly to the labels plans. On a personal level, what does it mean for you to work with such established and respected scene veterans?

K&I: We bear influence from all over the Dubstep spectrum but we were already big fans of Cyrus with his early album "From The Shadows" and Tunnidge's track Geddeon. So we are thrilled to be working under their wing.

H: What can we expect from you in the future? Any releases forthcoming or big projects in the pipe-line?

K&I: H20 is forthcoming on Origin Audio. Haterz was recently released on This is Dubstep volume 3 and we have a remix forthcoming on a EP for NE Records. We are currently working on a collaboration with Lurka who is making next level stuff at the moment.

H: To finish on a different note, it’s clear from your podcast series that music aside from Dubstep has been important. Who do you listen to outside of the 140 bpm spectrum?
K&I: We both listen to a wide range of music anything with a vibe or some sort of soul to it. Whether it be D&B House, Trip Hop, Ambient, 90's Hip Hop or even Metal. We are both open minded.

Free Download: Dark0 - Serotonin EP

Since first introducing Dark0 back in May, the young North London-via-Birmingham producer has been making movements and has just had his first release on NE Records, entitled 'If Only'. The tune is a stepping, sub-driven number featuring a drifting female vocal and puts a perfect end to a summer of loved-up garage beats and euphoric vocals:

Buy: Dark0 - If Only

To promote this debut release, Dark0 has released a free six track EP packed with sort of deep rollers layered with intricate drum-work that have become a trademark of his sound. Preview and download the tracks below:

Free Download: Griminal - Grimsom // Griminal - Grimsom II

Since coming out of The Movement's 'Fuck Radio: Under 18 Special' as easily one of the best younger MCs around way back in 2006, Griminal has been a hot property in Grime. The younger brother of legendary DJs Mak10 and Marcus Nasty aswell as MC Lil Nasty, he's a product of his environment with hard bars and on point beat selection. However, as is so often the case now, the best talents in grime are plucked by major labels and pushed to breaking the mainstream. Thankfully, despite declaring a Wiley-style retirement from Grime, Griminal is continuing to release Grime tunes. First was his free promo download 'Grimsom' in August, and now he follows that up with the second free collection that he promised in his interview on Logan Sama's Kiss FM show.

'Grimsom' is full of fresh tunes from the young MC, switching up between UK Funky, Hip-Hop and 140 beats and includes features from Lil Nasty and Maxsta aswell as new up-and-comers like Tiny and Stelf.

Download: Griminal - Grimsom

The imaginatively-titled second free promo, 'Grimsom II', is a similarly eclectic release but importantly showcases plenty of new bars from the man, which suggests these releases aren't simply about appeasing the Grime fans ready to backlash on his movements into the mainstream.

Download: Griminal - Grimsom II

Still to be expected is a full grime mixtape, aswell as the more commercial album due to be released on Universal Records.

Free Download: D1 - Unreleased Beats: Vol. 1

We've now got hold of the first fifteen tunes given away by dubstep pioneer D1, which feature a decent variety of classic tunes such as 'ET' and rarities like his skippy remix of Benga's 'Crunked Up', and the collection is exemplary of the sort of progressive beats he's been making from his late teens onwards. Showcasing his musical talent, and dedication to creating a more melodic take on dubstep, this .zip is an instant cop.

P Money - Ho! Riddim // Newham Generals - Bag Of Grease // JME - Blam!

Grime artists aren't known for their proficiency in the field of actually releasing their tunes (there's a lot of people still waiting for 'Bud Sweat & Beers'or the elusive 'D Double EP'), which, it must be said, is largely due to a lack of label and media support, so when one such long promised release does drop it's just one more good day for grime music.

First up is man-of-the-moment P Money's collaboration with Funky House hero Marco Del Horno and the most recent convert to grime production, DJ Swerve (the man also responsible for the beat behind D Double E's EP-referencing 'Streetfighter Riddim'), entitled 'Ho! Riddim':

Buy: Vinyl / Download

Second is a release which has been hugely anticipated by grime fans worldwide, and has been some time coming. The Newham Generals are easily among the most highly respected members of the grime scene. Releasing once more on Dizzee Rascal's Dirtee Stank label, the duo cement their position at the top as they deliver a short and flawless EP which features the huge 'I'm A General' with the late Slew Dem member Esco Big Bars joining them on vocal duties:

Buy: Download

Finally we have the latest from grime scene don and King of Grime crown-challenger, Boy Better Know's JME with his latest CD offering 'Blam!'. Despite many of the MCs in his generation making moves over to the money in the mainstream, this collection boasts a tracklist aiming to extend grime music to a wider audience rather than simply using his history in grime as pre-existent evidence of talent.

Buy: Download

And with Frisco's hotly anticipated long player set for release on Monday the 11th of October aswell, this could be quite a month for the UK scene...

Free Download: D1 - Unreleased Beats: Vol. 2

True dubstep legend, and a definite favourite of ours here at HEDMUK, D1 has this week given away a second batch of thirteen unreleased beats. Somewhat typically, considering he is still one of the most unfairly under-hyped producers about, these free releases have gone quite unnoticed by many (the first load of fifteen tunes went shamefully unnoticed by both of us here). So while we wait on that first collection to be uploaded again, here's the latest:

Download: D1 - Unreleased Beats: Vol. 2

Featuring some absolute classic D1 productions, including 'Boiler' and 'Violent U Turn' as well as a couple of new cuts which won't see a release, this collection is an absolute must have for any dubstep fan.

Free Download: thechemist - Dreaming EP

Another decent release from online label Vekta Records; this time they come with a two track EP from rising talent thechemist. 'Dreaming' packs a deep sub with a top layer of ambient synths. Progressive in structure, the tune builds from a treated vocal and a latent kick to peak in its middle with the addition of light hi-hats and a creeping melody, whilst still maintaining the sense of space with which it begins. The second track, 'Yummy', is much more in the vein of the sort of future garage that is filling out clubs at the moment. With a clear nod to the beat patterns of the mid- to late-nineties and a forward-thinking groove melody, a delicate balance is struck.
