On a garage tip.

In keeping with our predictions for a summer of old skool garage revivalism, we're noting the Days Like That project as one to keep an eye on. Aimed at bringing new and interesting garage and 2-step talent to the the fore by taking a nostalgic look back at the influential artists of the past. This includes a mix series, the second and latest of which comes from DJ Para, an original member of longtime purveyors of the lighter shades of 2-step D.E.A. Project:

Preceding that was a similarly swing-ridden set from legendary 2-steppers Dem 2, and was accompanied by an interview which can be read here:

Both DJ Para and Dem 2 can be seen playing old skool sets at the Days Like That pre-summer dance:

Bass Camp: 7th May

Ken Evil's seminal Manchester night returns next week. Running since 2004, Bass Camp provided the growing London dubstep scene with a second home up North, giving the likes of Skream, Loefah, Pinch and more recently Truth their debut bookings in the city.

In anticipation check these sets and mixtapes from some of those on the bill:

Distance: Chestplate 009

With his own fearsome, unique style, Distance has long been among our favourite producers here at HEDMUK. His label, the aptly named Chestplate, has also, since its inception, been one to keep an eye on as it combines consistency in releasing quality tunes with a release schedule that would put some of its counterpart labels to shame. And this is something set to continue as it was announced today that the follow-up to February's release of Chestplate 008 (featuring 'Beyond' and 'Menace'), will be available to purchase on the 7th of June this year.

The release will feature highly-anticipated stomper 'No Warning' (as featured on Chef's Dubstep Allstars mix), with the sparse, atmospheric 'Jungle Fears' on the flipside.

Elijah & Skilliam: May 2010 Mix

Yet another slick piece of mixing from grime's current most prominent DJs: Elijah & Skilliam. Again the duo show their absolute tirelessness in hunting down fresh tunes and breaking in new talent, whilst also bringing a few old school tunes into the mix.

Sin City Records Presents: The Croydon Dubheadz Pt. 2

We featured this one a while back but now, after multiple delays and a revised tracklist, it has finally got a full release as a double LP collection and doesn't disappoint. Featuring brand new tunes alongside some old classics, this one is guaranteed to be one of the year's must-buys.

Free Download: Benga - Who Remembers?

After Skream's Soundcloud giveaway of 'Clap Your Hands' a few weeks back, it seems almost like too much good favour that this breaks-influenced banger from his partner in crime Benga should also be given away for free. A genuine highlight of Chef's mix for Tempa's Dubstep Allstars series , the tune is being given away as part of a series of promo releases leading up to the next Rinse & FWD>> at Matter.

Free Download: Bojcot Selectah – U Know EP [VR001]

Bojcot Selectah is an excellent example of the way in which producers from overseas are currently contributing greatly to the progressive nature of what may more and more loosely be termed 'dubstep'. Based in Utrecht in the Netherlands, Bojcot Selectah first caught our attention with his collaboration with Dawn which featured on the first Echodub Loves collection. This three-track EP, the debut release from new online label Vekta Records, is further evidence of Selectah's production abilities. Opening with the scattered, Benga-like beats and pulsating bassline of 'U Know' which moves into the deep and brooding, sample-flecked 'Dangerous' before wrapping up with perhaps the most interesting tune he's produced to date in the form of 'S Dreams': a tune which blends aspects of old skool UK Garage, the new breed of UK Funky and Dubstep's emphasis on a sharp snare.

John Kimble: Exclusive Mix

Anyone watching GetDarker.TV on a regular basis will be none too aware of one John Kimble. Hailing from Finland and famed (if that's the right term) for his unreal abilities in producing tune IDs, The Kimble is a Get Darker favourite (see Darkside giving him a massive shout on this week's show here). It turns out that the boy is none too shabby behind decks either, as we found out when he sent in this hour long mix.

Seamlessly blending BPMs and carefully controlling the energy in the mix, this one is a genuinely interesting listen.

Wiley on the buttons.

Everyone knows that Wiley is easily one of the best grime lyricists that Bow E3 has thrown up, but what many are not aware of is that he is also among the most talented and influential producers of the last decade aswell. Lauded by such respected and prolific talents as Hyperdub don Kode9, longtime grime producer Terror Danjah (whose latest release on Butterz is also definitely worth a cop) and the UK's longest standing bass music shape-shifter Kevin Martin, Wiley's production talents are not to be sniffed at. However, grime instrumentals are certainly an acquired taste and, as such, do not often bring much cause for release unless they feature an MC going over the beat. The upshot of this is that instrumental album releases are few and far between, and that many of Wiley's beats have never been released in their own right. This changes now, though, as (finally) Avalanche Music: Volume 1 gets a release. Twenty-two previously unreleased beats from the man himself which act not only as a collection of evidence of talent, a document in favour of the value of standalone grime instrumentals and a CD's worth of essential listening, but also as a template for anyone wanting to hone their production skills and take the next ten years by storm themselves.

The Others - Gravity EP

The leading track from this EP has been absolutely slaying dancefloors for some time now, and has now (thankyou, Caspa) made its way onto wax. Backed by 'Karma', 'Dot 2 Dot' (which were both notable highlights of N-Type's Rinse Mix) and newer tune 'Puppetwalk' this release is an absolute must for the bag.

Mala: Space Voyage

With the recent, perhaps boring, predominance of halfstep more experimental production is to be welcomed. Cue Cosmonaut, a regular night delivering exclusive downtempo sets from the likes of Blue Daisy and Cooly G. This month sees Mala exploring the space to be found below 140 BPM in a set to include new, unheard and unreleased material. Oh, and it's free.

Free Download: Skream - Clap Your Hands

Yet another big tune from Skream, except this one comes with the (much appreciated) twist of not only actually getting a release, but also being absolutely free.

Clap Your Hands by SKREAMIZM

This also coincides with news of DJ Chef's plans to launch a website dedicated to pushing regular digital releases for cutting to dubs, burning to CDs or using with digital mixing equipment such as Serato. With the focus currently being placed on beats from Benga and Skream (with other similarly exclusive producers being alluded to), the project is, according to Chef, aimed simply at increasing the availability of the music to fans whilst also putting 'pence in pockets'. Whilst nothing has been said, it is arguable that this surprise move has been brought on by the theft of Skream's CDs towards the end of last month.

'London Pirate Frequencies'

Pirate radio stations are something of a dying breed now, as apparently anyone now has the ability to run their own internet radio station. However, this does not mean that the influence of pirate radio on the UK's musical subcultures can be so easily forgotten. Before the internet's popular accessibility provided a platform for the most obscure talents lurking in the underground, pirate radio was the only medium through which anything other than the mainstream's dirge could be accessed.

VBS TV's short documentary film provides an insider's view of the stations and people responsible for driving the UK's musical progression from the capital's tower block rooftops:
