Review: FKOF - Un/Known01
After a little over three years of pushing free downloads and mixtapes, our friends over at FatKidOnFire have stepped up to deliver their first release proper in the form of the 'FKOFUn/Known01' compilation. Featuring twenty tracks split across two CDs, the release is aimed - as its title might suggest - as pushing the boundaries of what we consider to be dubstep, as well as showcasing new talent alongside some of the scene's more established names.
The compilation, for the most part, deals in dubstep: continuing the largely successful reclamation of the sound's deeper elements and pushing on with recent attempts to expand upon the half-step template through scattered hand percussion and off-kilter hats. Tunes such as Perverse's 'Hallidome', Percept's 'Reality' and BunZer0's 'Melancholy' revel in their focus on drums and each stand to make the point that 'stripped back' needn't necessarily 'mean half-step with sub-bass'. Gantz is, and has for a long time been, one of the best around at making this point and his inclusion on the release - 'Low Lands' being a real standout - thus serves as a strong reference point for what can be achieved within the ever-tighter confines of the 140 bracket. On a similar note, although arguably in a field of his own entirely, Ipman manages something quite outstanding with 'Flipmode' and its flurry or breaks, stabs and pulsating sub. That is not to say, however, that tunes such as Caski's 'Sandstone' or TMSV's remix of Thelem's 'Drones' fall flat because of their lurching half-step drum patterns: both have an immense attention to groove and move solidly as a result, themselves emphasising that there's still plenty of room between the kick and the snare for a good tune.
As far as the title's suggestion goes, there is plenty on offer in terms of new names to be met alongside the more-established artists and the likes of Nanobyte, FNC and Eleven8 - as well as a whole host of others - all make strong cases for themselves, each taking steps towards stamping their signature on the sound.
The release can be previewed via the promo mix below, which is available, along with a digital download of the CD contents, for free to anyone purchasing the physical release.

Free Download: Gantz - Tesseract
Uploaded simply as a .zip folder entitled 'Gift', what Gantz delivered this evening was just that: among his most sought-after dubs, 'Tesseract' has been receiving regular spins from the likes of Joe Nice and BunZer0. A real builder, the beat grows from its light percussive beginnings, taking on sharp synths, eery atmospherics, clipped vocals and thicker, bolder percussion strokes until the tightly-controlled cacophony falls away with a sudden close.

Free Download: BunZer0 - Sunburn
Known perhaps more for his skills behind the decks than a computer, BunZer0's productions - notable for their organic, open rhythms and vivid approach to melody - have been stepped up a gear over the last year or so. To celebrate reaching two thousand followers on his Facebook Page, the Belgian maestro is giving out a free beat: 'Sunburn' is, rhythmically, in the vein of the garage-dubstep hybrids which made something of a resurgence on 2007's dancefloors, and flows with BunZer0's characteristic airy yet intricate synthlines.

BunZer0 - Dubstep Mix XXI

BunZer0, veteran of the dubstep scene and longtime overseas ambassador, has been a tireless promoter of all things quality and bass-driven for some time now; the Belgian native has graced stages across the globe, released tunes via the likes of Orientis and L2S, was the man to first book many of the UKs dubstep pioneers for their first gigs in Belgium, held down a moderator's role on dubstepforum, and hosts one of the Sub.FM's most popular slots in the form of the FOB show.
This latest studio mix from the man is packed full of dubs and forthcomings, and put together in the characteristically flawless style that has gained BunZer0 such acclaim.

Orientis Records - Angles w/ Exclusive Hedmuk Bonus Track & Mix

With the recent reinvigoration of the half-step leaning deep dubstep sound, it seems that 'Angles' and the Orientis imprint which brings it forward will serve as an important defining point in the progression of the genre. At eleven tracks, the statement is of quality over quantity and this quality is ensured by label-head Thelem's intense attention to detail: there is no filler here. The whole collection is defined by an acute sense of control and restraint, and it is the addition of this element which is so vital to the overall success of the release as both a project and a statement from the artists and label involved.
Beginning with Thelem's own 'Illusions', the album takes a rolling start over tight kicks and a hypnotic panning synth before moving into the haunting territory of Killa & Instinct's 'Halftime' with its bulging bassline. Subreachers' 'Left Hand Path' adds a subtle skip to the beat with a scatter of high-hats over a growling bassline, which is extended by BunZer0's techy offering in the form of 'Recovering' and 'Krymia', the first of two tunes from Crisp, which trails a floating synth over neatly tumbling percussion.
It is at this point that Antics' 'Unconscious' drops in with a stripped-back beat and pulsing sub and settles the pace once more. This careful ordering of the tracks serves as another reminder of the attention given to the details as 'Apocrypha', a collaboration between Instinct & Thelem, gently draws the listener from their halftime sway. Collision uses tribal drums and an eery sample on 'Another Planet' to build in progression over a warping bassline and lead into Crisp's heavy roller, 'Surge'.
The penultimate track on the compilation, Pressa's 'Orbs', lets a tightly controlled bass melody flow under rounded synth stabs before Legend4ry's 'That Kid's Got Spirit' rounds of the collection with a twisting bassline, reverb-laced synths and something of a telling sentiment in its title.
Compilation tracklist:
1 - Thelem - Illusions
2 - Killa & Instinct - Halftime
3 - Subreachers - Left Hand Path
4 - BunZer0 - Recovering
5 - Crisp - Krymia
6 - Antics - Unconscious
7 - Instinct & Thelem - Apocrypha
8 - Collision - Another Planet

To add to this, we've linked up with the Orientis family to exclusively offer something a little extra. First up is a free bonus track for the compilation from Pressa: 'Concussed' is a stuttering roller with plenty of swing in its drums and licks of his characteristically delicate, minimal synths. Also included is an exclusive mix of the tracks featured on the compilation which has been put together by Killa & Instinct and showcases the tunes featured, by a simple re-ordering and a series of subtle blends, in a different light.
