Free Download: Coleco - Hedmuk EP

Criminally underrated, Bristol's Coleco (follow him on Facebook here) is one of the most consistently exciting producers working in the UK right now: able to pull an immense amount of space from pretty much any tempo, his recent output has stretched all the way up to the too-often-static 160bpm range, and with impressive results. When Skream made a return to Rinse FM last month - alongside Loefah and Route 94 for an extended one-off show - he played 'Hypnagogia' from Coleco's last Soul Motive release and with it caught the attentions of a previously-dormant audience.

And it's to this audience that this free EP: a collection of tunes ranging from tight-stepping garage on 'Lovin Me' to a stretching cross of jungle, juke and breakbeat on 'Prime', and from the indefinable 'Coleco sound' of 'Automatic' - which manages to introduce more ideas over the course of one track than some producers could handle in an album's worth of material - to the pure bliss 'Smokey', with Victoria Klewin's vocals contributing a generous helping of soul. Free Download: Dark Sky - Night Light

It's perhaps the fact that Dark Sky are a collective of three separate producers (two of whom make up London's Boogaloo Crew) which makes their productions so varied. Their debut release of 'Ghost Notes' and 'Something To Lose' on Black Acre Records displayed incredible production talent in building both 8-bit dubstep and euphoric breakbeat, and the forthcoming digital 'Frames EP' on Pictures Music (release date is set for July 12th) is no less varied: swinging from future garage, to 2-step, to grime-flecked UK funky.

'Night Light' features on this EP and begins with barely-there atmospheric samples, before crashing in with a scale-ascending bassline and gunshot snares fired out in tight pairs. The control of the track's movements is what is most striking here, as jumps are made from that initial heavy drop, down to a solo synth and quarter-time beat without unsettling the flow of the tune.

Free Download: Skream - Freeizm Vol. 1

With his sophomore album 'Outside The Box' due out later this year, as well as an album alongside Benga and Artwork under the Magnetic Man moniker on the horizon, it seems unfair to expect much more of Skream. Yet due to the popularity of the Skreamizm series which followed his debut album from 2006 there is still a rising anticipation for the sixth installment of the run of EPs. With talk, also, of a Skream remixes EP (featuring remixes of his tunes by other artists, such as Silkie's 'Filth' remix) it seems the man causing all the hype has stepped up to the unwritten challenge in releasing the first installment of the punning 'Freeizm' series. The Free-P features a healthy mixture of sounds, with the mellow, spacious 'Minimooool' alongside the tripped-out 'Cut Like A Buffalo' remix, dirty tearout tune 'Pitfall' and old school garage stepper 'Show Me Love' and is definitely worth grabbing before the next two in the series are released in the run up to the highly anticipated album.

Sepalcure - Love Pressure EP.

Whilst this is a relatively late recommendation (release date was June 14th) it's one we feel strongly about. The result of a two week collaboration between Machinedrum and Praveen, 'Love Pressure', a four-track EP, combines dubbed-out atmospherics, organic 2-step beats and warm synth thrusts perfect for the early morning dance-floor or late afternoon sun. Title track 'Love Pressure' is an emotional fuzzy swell of a tune with euphoric female vocals and warm motoring synths , whilst 'Down' brings rich, lush textures coupled with end-of-the-night ambience. The submerged, Mount Kimbie-esque 'Every Day Of My Life' and deep mood of 'The Warning' finish off an EP we cannot recommend highly enough; if you're a fan of the likes of Joy Orbison, Scuba, Mount Kimbie, James Blake, Pangaea, Blue Daisy or Ramadanman this is a must!

GetDarkerTV 047 - The History Of Dubstep

GetDarker TV is nearly always worth a watch, but this week's show was definitely among the more notable of the 47 episodes which have aired since the project began back in March of last year as Distance, Cyrus and, the man behind GetDarker, Darkside joined to play a four hour back-to-back set moving from the old school dark garage sounds of the very late nineties right up to the drop of 'Midnight Request Line'.

Featuring some of the very earliest releases from influential labels such as Tempa, DMZ and Big Apple Records (aswell as a neat selection of exclusive white labels and the odd Transition 10") and the sort of exemplary mixing that has come to be expected of the three men behind the decks, the show is definitely worth a listen.

In keeping with our predictions for a summer of old skool garage revivalism, we're noting the Days Like That project as one to keep an eye on. Aimed at bringing new and interesting garage and 2-step talent to the the fore by taking a nostalgic look back at the influential artists of the past. This includes a mix series, the second and latest of which comes from DJ Para, an original member of longtime purveyors of the lighter shades of 2-step D.E.A. Project:

John Kimble: Exclusive Mix

Anyone watching GetDarker.TV on a regular basis will be none too aware of one John Kimble. Hailing from Finland and famed (if that's the right term) for his unreal abilities in producing tune IDs, The Kimble is a Get Darker favourite (see Darkside giving him a massive shout on this week's show here). It turns out that the boy is none too shabby behind decks either, as we found out when he sent in this hour long mix.



Seamlessly blending BPMs and carefully controlling the energy in the mix, this one is a genuinely interesting listen.

Don't knock Kiss FM! Seriously. Don't. DJ's with weekly shows include Logan Sama representing Grime, DJ EZ showing for Garage, David Rodigan playing out Reggae and Crazy D & Hatcha spinning Dubstep. Sureskank Convention Vol. 1: Kähn

Maybe it's youth, maybe it's the luck of the draw with which city's hospital you were in when you fell into the midwife's arms, or maybe it's that most terrible of abstract concepts: instinct. Regardless of the correct answer, some people just seem to have their head in the right space, an index finger bumping along to each beat of the pulse and, most importantly, their feet firmly on the ground. Joseph McGann, or Kähn as the posters would have him known, seems to be the entertainer of a rather subtle blend of those factors mentioned above: irritatingly young, at the tender age of 21 (if, in a post-Skream world, such a claim can really be made) and hailing from Bristol, most things seem, so far, to have gone his way. Working with and running Bristol nights Sureskank Convention and Shäkoom respectively, his productions cover the full range of intelligent bass music; blending aspects of Dub, Garage, UK Funky and the deeper, darker and denser end of the Dubstep spectrum to create a consistently intriguing sound. Having been producing for around three to four years now, he looks set to push out from the Bristol scene of which he has become such a part of as he offers the sort of diversity in his production which, up until very recently, there was no real demand for. As more nights (significant in being the best place to hear the newest tunes) begin to devote themselves less and less to a single particular style and rather present an increasingly wide selection of genres, opportunities for producers with strength in diversity (Scratcha DVA being perhaps the most prominent example currently) are growing.

This month sees the first in a series of mixes from the aforementioned Convention courtesy of Kähn (and Cölouryüm blog), and includes a whole of host of his own original productions; demonstrating the full spectrum of both his influences and abilities:
