Free Download: Busy Signal & Mavado - Badman Place (Widowmaker Remix)

Coming with suggestions of a UK funky workout for the infamous Jamaican acapella, Widowmaker's version rolls in on skippy rim-shots, crashes and flattened kicks; the soundsystem siren and reverberated vocal soon invites a deeper, lurching movement however, and as the first verse is set on its way the tune tips its hat to the raw subject and swing of the original bashment recording. This, more so than Coki's or, before that, Smut's reworking, has a definite sense of the dancehall roots from which it comes and adds to this the weight and space of dubstep.

Having turned heads with his tight productions over the last year, Widowmaker's long-awaited Wheel & Deal debut is due for release on the 2nd of July featuring 'Tunneling Wurm', 'Forgotten Ruin' and 'Exile', and is now available for pre-order from the W&D Surus store.

Badness - Nightmare: Mensah / Cotti & Coki / Bassboy Remixes

A little late arriving, but definitely worth the wait, the tenth vinyl release from No Hats No Hoods is a genre-spanning offering. Badness collaborates with Lil Nasty and grime scene don Skepta for the original title track, the classic stylings of which sets it up as one of the biggest grime releases of the year so far.

What makes it a surprising release, though, is the fact that each of the three remixes accompanying the original tune are actually very good. So often, remixes are simply tacked onto single releases for lack of a decent flipside, but not here...

Fast-rising Bristolian Mensah keeps the vocals intact and backs them with a simple rolling bass and hard-hitting snare:

Cotti and Coki also apply their trademark stamps to the track, as Badness' eery intro vocals are stretched out to full effect, before Coki's current favoured sound drops into the mix:


Finally, Bassboy switches from a half-time dub-reggae intro straight into an old school 4x4 bassline flex:

The Return (II Space)

From seemingly nowhere, Mala (co-founder and coordinator of London label and clubnight DMZ, and one half of production duo Digital Mystikz, alongside Coki) has caused serious waves by announcing a forthcoming Digital Mystikz LP due for release in the first week of May this year. After a packed-out 5th birthday dance, expectations were for the two producers to retreat once more into their own individual projects, with Mala focusing on his Deep Medi Musik label and Coki continuing his string of limited press releases (see 'Goblin' on Ringo Records), so this announcement comes as something of a surprise.

Regardless, the date is (characteristically vaguely) set and the LP is to be released as a limited press 3x12" set with catalogue number DMZLP001. No news, as yet, on a tracklist (apart from the assumed inclusion of Mala's track 'Return II Space', from which the LP's title is taken), neither is there on other formats although a CD release is expected to follow.
