Competition: Win tickets to Outlook Festival's Bristol Launch Party @ Motion, Bristol - 22/02/13

Outlook Festival is set to be one of the summer's hottest tickets again this year, and as the lineup and stage-host announcements trickle out so too do the infamous launch parties get underway. And where better a place to start than in one of dubstep's spiritual homes: Bristol.

With the full Mungo's Hi-Fi Soundsystem getting a workout in Room 1 from a line-up of legends including Prince Fatty, Mala, Kenny Ken (and, of course, the Mungo's boys themselves), and Room 2 being left in the more-than-capable hands of our friends over at Black Box - with Phaeleh, V.I.V.E.K, Commodo, DJ Madd and Thinking taking care of proceedings.

To support the event, we've linked up with Motion to offer the chance to win a pair of free tickets to the event; and all you have to do to be in with a chance is send your answer to the following simple question to hedmuk@gmail.com, with 'Outlook Motion Competition' as the subject:

Despite claiming this one as favourite of those he's made, Benton today has simultaneously captured the early waves of the British summertime, celebrated reaching 2000 followers on Twitter and avoided troublesome sample clearances by giving away this smooth jungle-tinged roller for free. That he's giving away one of his favourite tunes, furthermore, can only suggest big things are to be expected from his debut LP, 'Reflections', which is due to drop this year on N-Type's Wheel & Deal Records.

5 More Classic Sets/Mixtapes

Since we got such positive feedback for our last collection of classic sets and mixtapes, we've decided to make it a semi-regular feature and will be posting old, and sometimes hard to find, mixes in slightly nostalgic bunches like this from time to time.

Radio 1's Essential Mix show has a simple formula, and that is to put some of the world's biggest DJs to the two-hour test and see what sort of a set they can come up with. Few Essential Mixes have retained as much legend in the UK's bass music scene as the dubstep and grime special hosted in 2006, which featured the newly-renamed Plastician, Digital Mystikz and Roll Deep taking shifts around the decks.

A legendary Stella Session in which Skream is joined by Mala and Chef. All three DJs have a huge selection of dubs with them and vow to keep playing 'until the dubs run out'.

The set in which Wiley's mouth may have got the better of him as his constant sends for God's Gift eventually saw the studio rushed and the show ended early, and would also contribute to Geeneus' famous ban on grime at Rinse in 2007.

A genuine rarity, this live recording from Transmission in Leeds is a run through of much of the material that has made DMZ and all involved with it such an institution within dubstep.

Dubstep's American ambassador, Joe Nice, is reputed for the wide selection of dubs he carries as well as his passion for the music. This mix goes down as a catalogue of some of the tunes that have been lost to the scene's celebrated dubplate culture.

Free Download: Truth - Perfect Combination

After a huge year for the trio from New Zealand, which included tours across the UK, Europe and the United States, and releases on the likes of Skream's Disfigured Dubz, Mala's Deep Medi Musik and their homeland label Aquatic Lab, Truth have given out 'Perfect Combination': a tune which aptly describes their approach to both production and DJing as it balances a mid-range melody with an all important bass-weight.

Tunnidge - Cool'eh Mag Podcast 011

The latest podcast for Cool'eh Mag sees Tunnidge take a slightly different approach to laying down a studio mix, as he instead uses it to explore his influences from the late '80s/early '90s rave and jungle scenes. The significance of such music to some of the biggest names in Bass Music, from Mala to Kode9, is no secret and Tunnidge shows in this mix that he is no exception. With a tracklist full of classics that speak for themselves, this mix comes highly recommended.

Mala: Space Voyage

With the recent, perhaps boring, predominance of halfstep more experimental production is to be welcomed. Cue Cosmonaut, a regular night delivering exclusive downtempo sets from the likes of Blue Daisy and Cooly G. This month sees Mala exploring the space to be found below 140 BPM in a set to include new, unheard and unreleased material. Oh, and it's free.

The Return (II Space)

From seemingly nowhere, Mala (co-founder and coordinator of London label and clubnight DMZ, and one half of production duo Digital Mystikz, alongside Coki) has caused serious waves by announcing a forthcoming Digital Mystikz LP due for release in the first week of May this year. After a packed-out 5th birthday dance, expectations were for the two producers to retreat once more into their own individual projects, with Mala focusing on his Deep Medi Musik label and Coki continuing his string of limited press releases (see 'Goblin' on Ringo Records), so this announcement comes as something of a surprise.

Regardless, the date is (characteristically vaguely) set and the LP is to be released as a limited press 3x12" set with catalogue number DMZLP001. No news, as yet, on a tracklist (apart from the assumed inclusion of Mala's track 'Return II Space', from which the LP's title is taken), neither is there on other formats although a CD release is expected to follow.
