Competition: Win a Test Press of Piezo's Discipline EP, forthcoming on Subaltern Records

It seems like a while since our last competition, so it's good to be returning in support of such a strong release from one of the hardest working new labels around. Due on vinyl on the 26th of May, and with Juno hosting the digital version exclusively on the from the 2nd of June, Subaltern's fifth release is perhaps their strongest yet, which is no mean feat considering a healthy roster of previous contributors which includes D-Operation Drop, Geode and LAS among others. Piezo's three track EP for the label - which includes a remix from Hedmuk mainstay Thelem that threatens to upstage the main event - sees the Italian producer/engineer flexing his acute attention to detail and drawing intricate grooves from the 140 template. It's refreshing to see a producer demanding more, and achieving so much as a result.

One of this year's standout releases, and from two of the UK's most exciting musical minds, Akkord's debut long-player is the sort of record you might play to someone trying to write off electronic music as mere button pushing. Forward-facing, progressive, original, genre-defying, interesting and - an adjective not often seen alongside those descriptions - genuinely danceable, Indigo and Synkro, along with the likes of Troy Gunner and Biome, who also feature on the album, have delivered on the huge promise of their early limited-press releases. Recent mixes for Resident Advisor and Boiler Room, meanwhile, have seen the duo applying their years of experience behind the decks.

To celebrate the release, Project 13 will be hosting the official album launch party in the basement of Manchester's 2022NQ.  Support comes from fellow Mancunians Biome and Acre, as well as Edmondson - a recent signing to Indigo's own Electromagnetic Fields imprint.

Competition: Win a signed test press of Thelem - Bring Me Down (feat. T-Man) / False Imprint [IMRV007]

Innamind continue to cement their position as one of the most consistent and progressive labels within dubstep on this, the seventh vinyl release from the label. Enlisting new signee Thelem, following up his latest 12" for Osiris Music, the lead cut welcomes a second new face in the form of Manchester MC T-Man, whose blistering vocal brings a cocksure swagger to Thelem's low-swung halfstep instrumental. Having already proved himself on beats for Dub Phizix, and with a Wayfarer & Kanjira collaboration brewing too, it'd be difficult to disagree when he says he's 'one of the best on road at the moment.' The B-side sees Thelem in a more meditative mood: tight-looped, revolving synths, blips and whirls skirting in-between heavy-tread drums.

This release also marks the first video outing for the label, which is premiering here on Hedmuk. Competition: Win a limited test press of Ipman's Aight EP on Pressed Records

We've been waiting to see this one released since a clip appeared on YouTube, courtesy of AJP, and had us at the replay button. Finally picked up by Pressed Records for a full 12" outing, 'Aight' still bangs as hard as it did back then: drums punching through a huge bassline groove, Ipman's characteristic control guides every element in the mix and the end result is one that tests the mettle of any soundsystem going. Killawatt turns the whole thing inside out for the B-side; drenched in delay and swarming hi-hats, the beat takes a dubwise approach: stripped back and stretched out, all deep textures and moody atmospherics.

Competition: Win a test press of Facta - Montpelier EP [BDMUP005]

Badimup race on to their fifth release and follow up a sold out Wen plate with a three track EP from London-Bristol straddler, Facta. Part of the joy of hearing this young producer's beats is in sharing his taste as a listener: every new project drips with influence, taking a melee of sounds and styles and running it through with something that, until now, had yet to go under the turntable's needle. Horsepower Productions form a good point of reference, whether in the flat slapped snares of 'Kobra', the impeccable roll of 'Montpelier', or the cinematic atmosphere of 'Upsetter' - but it would be unfair to limit the EP to a single influence as, clear from the variation in styles across the three tracks, there is so much going on here. What's perhaps most commendable though, is the distinctive texture of the release; if a debut 12" can be seen as an opportunity for an artist to announce their sound, then Facta has done a very good job.

Competition: Win a test press of Piezo - Ptay / Ptay (Killawatt Remix) [NMR037]

Like an Italian Ipman, the engineering and sound design behind Piezo's work is exemplary. This latest release, coming from the Nomad Records stable, is no different, 'Ptay' is dripping in atmosphere and subtle touches - a rolled crash cymbal here, distant footstep there - as it rolls on rounded kicks and progresses through reams of hand percussion and synth lines that rise into the beat before falling away just as unannounced. Cinematic is a word that is too often overused, but it works here as the track holds down its own sense of narrative structure and breaks, happily, from any standardised outlay. Killawatt, an ideal selection for the remix duties, flattens out the kicks to a steady pound and leaves the whole thing dripping in dread atmospherics. What's astounding, again on that note of the subtle touch, is the amount of movement generated with just light touches of hi-hat and loose snares - from static beginnings, the beat gathers a momentum that feels like it might go on forever.

Competition: Win an advance copy of Boofy & Lemzly Dale - Catch A Body / Banshee [S7S001]

Icy synths, coarse strings and clapped snares - lots of clapped snares - are what make up Sector 7 Sounds' first release. 'Catch A Body' broods, with Boofy's trademark skittering hats skipping over kicks set deep beneath a taut, Lemzly Dale string arrangement. Lil Nasty, Dot Rotten and Big H are on hand with adlibs and the result, all stop-start rhythms and spluttered bassline, is greaze. The flip, more a AA than a B-side, takes the stop-start and gives it more strut with a swinging kick/clap combination and cascading hats. Both are heavy cuts and, hardly surprisingly, have peppered the sets of Bristol's most recent grime upstarts, including Kahn, Neek, Asa and Hi5Ghost. This is classic era grime resurrected, and what format could be more fitting than a limited press white label?

Not content with quietly turning the dubstep scene's collective head and scoring himself the second, hugely-anticipated release on V.I.V.E.K's System label, longtime friend of the blog, Karma, has decided to launch his own clubnight. Quiet though he is, we hit him up for a few words on the thinking behind the night and what people can expect from Methods in the future.

Hedmuk: Tell us a bit about the night: where did the idea come from, and what sort of sound and vibe are you going to be representing?

Karma: One of the ideas behind Methods is to showcase a variety of music that we're feeling; dubstep is our focus, though dub, garage, and grime are also high on our agenda. We want to avoid the night being just about the line-ups: sure it's important to have good established DJs and up-and-coming talent on the bill, but our resident DJs are solid and we're hoping that people will pay them as much attention as they do the headliners. We think there's a lack of homegrown nights in London right now with a communal feel, where people come because the vibe is right and not just because there's 5 big names on the bill playing in a club everyone's heard of. We want to keep it relatively underground.

H: How important do you think it is for the development of the scene to have outlets like this for up-and-comers to be able to showcase their music in a live setting?

K: I think it's very important. It can be very difficult for new artists to get their music heard, unless they have support from another DJ; often the only alternative is to use the internet, but things always get misinterpreted, or mislabeled, which can sometimes make people misjudge things in a way the creator never intended, which is very unfair. That's why it's a great opportunity to be able to play your music out live: the music comes straight from the artist to the listener, there's no bullshit between the two, and that allows the listener to make up their own mind. It's more honest.

H: Can you see the Methods nights becoming a regular fixture, or are the dates likely to be more sporadic?

K: Yeah, we'd like to make it a regular night - how regularly we're not sure, monthly or bi-monthly would be great but we're willing to see how this one goes first.

H: And can you give any hints as to who might be appearing at future events?

K: We have a few ideas, but we don't want to reveal anything just yet...

When Gantz described the bassline on 'Stayer' as sounding 'like chocolate milk' it wasn't entirely obvious what he meant. Until we heard the final masters of this two-track release, that is. For his second second vinyl outing on Innamind, our favourite Turk comes with his usual unsettling lean: twisted samples, seasick rhythms and basslines that lurk around the beat with intent. What's so refreshing about the release is that it's emblematic not only of Gantz' apparently inability to do anything but lift boundaries and throw them yards ahead, but also of the Innamind team's excitement at being given the opportunity to test boundaries of their own and actually put the music out there: this is not a label interested in comfortable surroundings. Hence, as obvious as it may seem, both names have featured regularly on this site since their very earliest beginnings.

Following up from Widowmaker's heavyweight twelve, the fledgling Kaium Records takes its second jet in the right direction with release number two coming courtesy of a young producer who has spent the last year turning heads under his various guises as Fornax, Arka and the 'F' of FNC. This, his first solo 12", sees him carving huge grooves from a minimal framework of drums and sub, taking on an elastic half-step on the A-side and, heading over the edge to the flip-side, ties kicks and hand drums into an insistent roller. The digital release will also feature a third track, FNC's 'Imprinted', which has been receiving regular rotation from the likes of Cyrus and Razor Rekta.

Despite now having established themselves a staple on the Manchester club circuit, the guys at Project 13 have never been about finding a laurel to rest on and continue to dedicate themselves to trying new things - and, not unlike ourselves here at Hedmuk, always to retain the music as the centrepiece. Their latest venture comes with a little more mystery then usual, though, as they announce the first of a run of parties held in a warehouse space in Manchester, featuring as-yet-unannounced headliners representing Deep Medi, Hypercolour and Hyperdub respectively; and with all this in mind we thought it best to hit them up for a little more information on what to expect from their upcoming Secret Sessions parties, as well as to get some prize together for a big giveaway:

Hedmuk: What was the thinking behind moving P13 out of a more regular club environment, as it were, and into the more neutral warehouse setting?

Jacob P13: It’s a project we’ve been contemplating for a while now, the resources have been there and we felt now was the perfect time to execute. Our nights at Joshua Brooks have all been smashes but, as great as the venue is, our music policy and following doesn’t tend to gel as well as there as we’d like.

Ideally, we’d like a big dark room, a quality sound system and quality artists - which is what we have at the Secret Sessions.

H: Have you got more of this type of event planned for the future, and will you still be running the more regular nights at Joshua Brooks too?

Matt P13: We plan on doing a short string of events like this in the future, although whether that’ll be at the same venue or not, we don’t yet know. I suppose it comes down entirely to how well the first one goes down, and if it captures the interest of our following as well as we hope it will. Running an event like this has so many more risks that your standard club event. If we do continue these warehouse-type parties they’ll be more spaced out than our club nights, and will crop up just as randomly as our club-based events. We will also be continuing at Joshua Brooks, although our next event won’t be until mid-May, for our 2nd birthday.

H: In terms of the music you're representing, do you feel like your new setting in the warehouse gives you more freedom when putting together a lineup as the venue does less to distract from the music on show?

J: Yeah fully, we can do our own thing in terms of orchestrating the fundamentals of the event - from the music policy, the sound, the staffing, the door policy and everything else in between - to make it a Project 13 party at its realist and finest.

It’s events like these that intrigued me the most about this scene, going to free parties over the country where you had no idea what to expect besides good music, good sound and good vibes. We couldn’t be happier with what we have in store for the event.

H: Is keeping the capacity low, at 150, something you've thought a lot about too?

M: Semi. It’s in our best interests as well as the audience’s that we keep the numbers down for safety purposes. However, having 150 people in a large industrial space keeps the intimacy there and gives people their own space to do as they please. When we put on nights in clubs, we put a lot of effort into filling the gaff. It can be going off on a next level, however if you’ve not got space to breathe let alone move to the music, it can seriously damage the vibe on a whole. I personally feel that having space to dance, mingle with like-minded people, or just lurk on your own in a dark corner is what people will take back from the night, and makes a good night just that.

H: What else have you got lined up for Project 13 over the coming year?

J: Event-wise we have the Secret Sessions party and the 2nd birthday at Joshua Brooks in May.  Our main focus at the moment is planning the next series of live streams which will be dropping in Spring. We’re also orchestrating the first release for the label that we are hoping to have out by the start of next year on vinyl.

[P13 residents] Leadbelly and Acre have just released a white label which has gone down great; Leadbelly and T-Man have a video dropping shortly which is looking big; Acre has a massive release out soon, so watch out for that; and there will be a few of our artist at Outlook this year too.

Free Download: Sparxy & Fused Forces - Leviathan Remixes EP

After a somewhat overwhelming response to December's remix competition was the task of picking out a winner to be released on Bacon Dubs and a selection of runners-up to have their efforts collected on a free EP. With the original intention being to put just three entries on the free release, our final shortlist of five was proving difficult to whittle down any further and so the decision was jointly made to include four entries.

First though, is first place: Yungwanz took the 140 template and bent it to a techy drum & bass stepper, playing intricate percussion off against the original's Reese bassline to a startling effect. His remix is available to preview below, and will be included on Sparxy's next release on Bacon Dubs.

There's similar variation to be found among the runners-up too, each of whom set to take the remix stems and shape them to a new mould and mood. Feonix took the minimal approach, stripping the entire project back to its core elements of bass, space and swinging drums; Syxx, meanwhile, stepped to the other extreme and amped the entire track up with the Reese sound dominating, puckered only by latent synth plucks and a heavy snare; ARtroniks went for atmosphere and came back with plenty of it, along with meditative head-nod drums and those Reeses twisted in on themselves; of all of the entries, just1 arguably took the biggest turn left from the original tune and made of it something almost entirely new: a warm sub with dubby drums and piano and choral samples lilting throughout.

Remix Competition: Sparxy & Fused Forces - Leviathan

One of this year's fast-risers, Sparxy has spent 2012 leap-frogging his way to Radio 1 and Rinse FM plays from the likes of scene legends Skream, Benga and N-Type, as well as steering output from his own Bacon Dubs imprint up the release charts with uncompromising regularity. This week saw the release of his own 'Gravitation EP', and with it comes the opportunity to not only have a go at remixing one of the stand-out tunes from the release - 'Leviathan', a collaboration with Fused Forces - but also to have the remix released on Bacon Dubs as well as winning a whole sack of other good stuff.

The rules are simple:

1. Entries can be in any style, of any length and incorporate any number of other parts, but at least 4 of the remix parts provided may be used.

2. Finished remixes should be sent via email attachment or Mediafire link to hedmuk@gmail.com before the closing date, with the subject 'Sparxy Remix Competition'.

3. Your email should include a note of which 4 (or more) of the remix parts have been used.

4. Entries should be sent in 320kbps mp3 format.

5. All entries are to be kept offline and private until after the competition close date.

6. One entry per person.

7. All entrants are strongly advised to label their remix entries properly with ID3 tags in order to clearly indicate who is responsible for each version.

Competition: Win a Test Press of IMRV002 / Catacombs - Innamind Recordings Mix

It doesn't seem like anywhere near as long as a year since we announced the very first release on Innamind Recordings, but over the past eleven months the label has delivered an increasingly-impressive and challenging series of releases and this summer stamped it's iconic kaleidoscopic artwork on its first vinyl record. The latestt 10" from the imprint features two standout cuts from the North-West, with Catacombs and Knowledge teaming up for the 'Exodus' on the A-side - a hefty stepper, moving with old-school Oriental sampling that's been receiving regular rotation from the likes of Biome - and Catacombs' solo joint 'Organism', a grizzled favourite of Rinse FM legend N-Type, occupying the flip-side. The digital release will also feature, much to the delight of any followers of Catacombs' progress no doubt, 'East' as an exclusive third track.

The Warehouse Project has risen over the last six years to near-legendary status. Beginning in an old Boddingtons Brewery in Strangeways, before moving to the otherworldly underground car park space beneath Manchester's main train station and then, in Easter of this year, to the cavernous Victoria Warehouse in Trafford Park, the Project is seen as not just a series of top lineups but also as an experience in itself. It's difficult to talk about clubbing in Manchester without mentioning the Hacienda, and many perceive the yearly 12-week runs of WHP events to be an extension of that vibrancy and creativity that first put The Rainy City's dance music scene on the map.

And yet another staple of Manchester's ever-bristling nightlife is APE; a name synonymous with big raves, eclectic lineups and huge parties hosted at the Warehouse Project. This year's seventh birthday celebrations are no different, and that online tickets for the event sold out more than a week in advance is testament to both the quality of the music on offer and to APE's reputation when it comes to throwing a party. This Saturday's lineup mixes iconic performers across a range of styles, such as Sir David Rodigan MBE, Benga, Shy FX, Jackmaster, DOOM, The Bug, Andy C and DJ EZ, with some of the newer breed of talent, including Deadboy and Redinho, and is set to be an all-encompassing route through the realm of soundsystem and rave culture.
