Free Download: Destiny's Child - Bills Bills Bills (Harmonimix)

Before he was winning the Mercury Music Prize and cringing his way through Newsnight interviews talking about 'ambient chillax', one of the many reasons that the leading gent of UK electronic music was generating such a buzz was his ballsy takes on chart-straddling pop, hip-hop and R&B hits from across the pond. One of the few to ever see life on vinyl was this twisted, synth-and-clicks-driven version of Destiny's Child's 'Bills Bills Bills', which appeared alongside an 'A Milli' remix on an unofficial white label. And even as the innovative Brit finds his services under request from the likes of Drake and RZA, his early days still sound something like a future that we're yet to catch up with.

Free Download: Sully - Scram (Chemist Bootleg)

Another emerging proponent of all things cold, Chemist's synth workouts and clap-heavy beats have been doing the rounds on Rinse and Radio 1Xtra over the last few months. In line with the output of labels like Coyote and Oil Gang, this is sparse, stand-up music.

This bootleg, then, makes for an interesting choice - and gives the original a whole new face - as Chemist takes Sully's creeping string line, strips out the pulsing footwork percussion and strips the whole thing down to detuned saws and a gully, reverse-stepped rhythm. It's an exercise in forceful restraint.

Free Download: MIK - Donny Don Acapella

No stranger to remix treatment, some of our favourites of which are available for free download here and here, MIK today unleashes a whole new selection of re-rubs via his Bandcamp site. Featuring a full range of styles - from zoners reminiscent of Fable's recent remixes for us, to percussion-driven numbers and greazy synth-led approaches - the EP showcases not only a fine selection of new production talents, but also the versatility of the MC's flow patterns.




With this in mind, we thought it pertinent to suggest, after MIK got in contact about the release, that we give out the acapella as a free download for a limited period to encourage more producers to take on the challenge of combining their sounds and styles with an MC who lends himself to such a breadth of approaches; and he agreed, so here it is:

Free Download: Sparxy & Fused Forces - Leviathan Remixes EP

After a somewhat overwhelming response to December's remix competition was the task of picking out a winner to be released on Bacon Dubs and a selection of runners-up to have their efforts collected on a free EP. With the original intention being to put just three entries on the free release, our final shortlist of five was proving difficult to whittle down any further and so the decision was jointly made to include four entries.

First though, is first place: Yungwanz took the 140 template and bent it to a techy drum & bass stepper, playing intricate percussion off against the original's Reese bassline to a startling effect. His remix is available to preview below, and will be included on Sparxy's next release on Bacon Dubs.

There's similar variation to be found among the runners-up too, each of whom set to take the remix stems and shape them to a new mould and mood. Feonix took the minimal approach, stripping the entire project back to its core elements of bass, space and swinging drums; Syxx, meanwhile, stepped to the other extreme and amped the entire track up with the Reese sound dominating, puckered only by latent synth plucks and a heavy snare; ARtroniks went for atmosphere and came back with plenty of it, along with meditative head-nod drums and those Reeses twisted in on themselves; of all of the entries, just1 arguably took the biggest turn left from the original tune and made of it something almost entirely new: a warm sub with dubby drums and piano and choral samples lilting throughout.

Free Download: Nanobyte - Lost Time: The Remixes [Innamind 1 Year Anniversary]

When Innamind Recordings boss Jeremy announced that the label was due to celebrate its one year anniversary this December it served as a sharp reminder as to just how far the imprint has come, and how quickly: Innamind has, over twelve rapid months, become a tight and efficient machine, pushing out quality material on a regular and consistent basis without having to sacrifice anything of quality or artistic value to meet its own mechanistic specifications. Quality is an important word here too, as while many labels would struggle to put out releases at a rate of almost one a month and still maintain the close attention to detail and upfront A&R work required to ensure that everything hitting the shelves - be they virtual or not - the Innamind tag has become, in a way, its own seal of approval.

When speaking to DJ Thinking about the origins of his labels Black Box and Box Clever, he couldn't stress enough the importance of a new label establishing its own identity in order to put its own stamp on the scene; and it seems fitting that Innamind's stamp-like artwork has become, over the last year, symbolic of the label's development into something which has developed and almost grown into its own striking, and reliable, identity. And with the recent announcement of a third vinyl release dropping in January, this time with with the inimitable Gantz at the helm, it seems that this strong run is set to continue apace.

To celebrate this first milestone, as seems fitting, we've linked up with the minds behind Innamind once more to deliver a selection of free music which shows off just a slice of some of the talent that the label plays host to. Taking a standout track from Nanobyte's debut release on the label, and putting it in the hands of Gantz, Anex, Occult, Dubtek and Congi to take on remix duties, the results are as varied an pleasing as you'd expect.

Remix Competition: Sparxy & Fused Forces - Leviathan

One of this year's fast-risers, Sparxy has spent 2012 leap-frogging his way to Radio 1 and Rinse FM plays from the likes of scene legends Skream, Benga and N-Type, as well as steering output from his own Bacon Dubs imprint up the release charts with uncompromising regularity. This week saw the release of his own 'Gravitation EP', and with it comes the opportunity to not only have a go at remixing one of the stand-out tunes from the release - 'Leviathan', a collaboration with Fused Forces - but also to have the remix released on Bacon Dubs as well as winning a whole sack of other good stuff.

The rules are simple:

1. Entries can be in any style, of any length and incorporate any number of other parts, but at least 4 of the remix parts provided may be used.

2. Finished remixes should be sent via email attachment or Mediafire link to hedmuk@gmail.com before the closing date, with the subject 'Sparxy Remix Competition'.

3. Your email should include a note of which 4 (or more) of the remix parts have been used.

4. Entries should be sent in 320kbps mp3 format.

5. All entries are to be kept offline and private until after the competition close date.

6. One entry per person.

7. All entrants are strongly advised to label their remix entries properly with ID3 tags in order to clearly indicate who is responsible for each version.

The competition will close on Sunday the 13th of January, after which date all entries will be judged jointly by Sparxy and Hedmuk and the winning entries announced a week later, on the 20th of January.

The winner will not only have their remix included on Sparxy's next EP (subject to contract agreement), but will also receive: 1 x Hedmuk X Thelem T-shirt in the size of their choice, 1 x Bacon Dubs T-shirt in the size of their choice, 1 x Bacon Dubs coffee mug, Bacon Dubs stickers, the entire Bacon Dubs back catalogue on a limited edition CD. Three runners-up will also have their versions released as part of a free EP released via Hedmuk.

Free Download: Kahn - Remixes & Versions

Part of the Young Echo Collective and one of the most exciting producers to come out of Bristol, if not the UK, in recent years, Kahn has been gathering momentum with two 12" releases on scene veteran Peverelist's Punch Drunk label, the huge 'Way Mi Defend'/'Azalea' on Box Clever and a steady stream of much sought-after remixes and bootlegs. To celebrate reaching 5000 followers on Soundcloud, he has given away this four track collection of remixes and bootlegs which would otherwise go unreleased. Ranging from synth-led dubstep, to rumbling dub to straight-up grime in the form of his remix of M.I.K's anthem 'Duppy & Leave', this serves equally as a thanks to all those who have been following his progress over recent years as it does an introductory package to those not yet familiar with his productions. We first became aware of Subreachers through their remix of Killa and Instinct's Indica. Hailing from Belgium, the production duo make deep, dark, moody beats or, in there words, 'music for frozen souls'. Free Download: Plan B - Prayin' (Breakage Remix)

Breakage has added his touch to a few tunes over the last year, but this is one of the first which really cuts it and shows off his impressive talent as a producer. The intro is a haunting affair with dampened crackles and chords lying deep beneath Plan B's stripped back, soulful vocals before Breakage's characteristic, toe-shaking sub-bass kicks in to drive the track forward. Scattered beats are built upon each other, with slight alterations being added in each coming sequence, and the vocal continues to drift in and echo out throughout. And for free: definitely worth a listen at the very least.

Free Download: Foals - Spanish Sahara (Deadboy Remix)

We're big fans of Deadboy here at HEDMUK, so are pretty excited to be able to put up his remix of 'Spanish Sahara' by Foals for free download. Clocking in at an epic nine minutes long, the track builds from sparse beginnings in an intricately controlled manner as new parts are brought into the mix and others threaded out before a short burst of pure 4x4 euphoria brings the tune to an end.

Free Download: La Roux - Quicksand (Gemmy Remix)

Despite the fact that La Roux is, by all accounts, a pretty rubbish '80s revivalist pop act, it seems, since Skream's 'Let's Get Ravey Remix' went top three in the charts last year (and was arguably behind much of the success of the original 'In For The Kill' single) a lot of producers view the be-quiffed androgynous one to be some sort of potential goldmine of remixing potential.

The slew of reworkings, from the likes of Foamo and chronic remixer Nero, pretty much all fell on dead ears, or those already favouring Skream's effort that had started the trend in the first place. Now, more than a year after the boy from Croydon's chart-storming success, Gemmy has joined the latest trend: giving tunes away for free. The track is classic Gemmy: a softened kick-drum driving the sub's undulation, with a pinched synth melody drifting over the top. In fact, of all the people to have forwarded remixes of La Roux, Gemmy's apparent '80s leanings perhaps make him the most suitable candidate so far.

Tes La Rok taking over on the buttons (again)

Tes La Rok has always garnered suitable amounts of interest from fans in the UK as he was one of the first examples of genuinely good dubstep producers flourishing from overseas (with the man representing Finland). Arguably his biggest release to date is the much hyped remix of Uncle Sam's 'Round The World Girls', which featured on Caspa & Rusko's hugely influential FabricLive. 37 mix, however his original productions show an interesting range of diversity. One thing common to nearly all of his tunes, though, is the obvious influence of the dub tunes from which dubstep takes its moniker. Often using samples and working them into tunes flecked with off-beat organ licks, he achieves a balance many producers can't. His next release (the final one before his much anticipated long-player, which is expected to drop sometime this year) is a perfect example of his combination of old school jungle-dub sounds and pitch-bent bass tones. A remix 12" featuring his reworkings of Mungo's Hi-Fi featuring Brother Culture on the A-side and Top Cat & Jack Murda on the flip is forthcoming on Noppa Recordings in April/May of this year. The A-side is a tune clearly aimed at the floor, with a slow-building, junglist-style intro and huge bent drops; whilst the B-side shows his ability to make tunes for the living room aswell, as it leans far more on its dub influences. A knock-on effect of the release is, perhaps obviously, to raise the stakes for the album to come, which HEDMUK is looking out for with increasing anticipation...
