Competition: Win an advance copy of Boofy & Lemzly Dale - Catch A Body / Banshee [S7S001]

Icy synths, coarse strings and clapped snares - lots of clapped snares - are what make up Sector 7 Sounds' first release. 'Catch A Body' broods, with Boofy's trademark skittering hats skipping over kicks set deep beneath a taut, Lemzly Dale string arrangement. Lil Nasty, Dot Rotten and Big H are on hand with adlibs and the result, all stop-start rhythms and spluttered bassline, is greaze. The flip, more a AA than a B-side, takes the stop-start and gives it more strut with a swinging kick/clap combination and cascading hats. Both are heavy cuts and, hardly surprisingly, have peppered the sets of Bristol's most recent grime upstarts, including Kahn, Neek, Asa and Hi5Ghost. This is classic era grime resurrected, and what format could be more fitting than a limited press white label?

Free Download: Lil Nasty - Rock N Rolla EP

Continuing on from 'Hungry Season', Lil Nasty has followed his brother in releasing a free EP in the run-up to the release of his much awaited second CD, 'Nasty By Nature'. The 'Rock N Rolla EP' continues Nasty's blending of aggressive lyricism and an interesting choice of beats, aswell as seeing features from the usual mix of established names like Ghetts and Griminal alongside newcomers like Stelf.

The release also comes with an announcement of the forthcoming release of the 'Nasty By Nature' single, which first appeared on the DTA Grimetape, on the 28th of February.

Free Download: Griminal - Grimsom // Griminal - Grimsom II

Since coming out of The Movement's 'Fuck Radio: Under 18 Special' as easily one of the best younger MCs around way back in 2006, Griminal has been a hot property in Grime. The younger brother of legendary DJs Mak10 and Marcus Nasty aswell as MC Lil Nasty, he's a product of his environment with hard bars and on point beat selection. However, as is so often the case now, the best talents in grime are plucked by major labels and pushed to breaking the mainstream. Thankfully, despite declaring a Wiley-style retirement from Grime, Griminal is continuing to release Grime tunes. First was his free promo download 'Grimsom' in August, and now he follows that up with the second free collection that he promised in his interview on Logan Sama's Kiss FM show.

'Grimsom' is full of fresh tunes from the young MC, switching up between UK Funky, Hip-Hop and 140 beats and includes features from Lil Nasty and Maxsta aswell as new up-and-comers like Tiny and Stelf.

The imaginatively-titled second free promo, 'Grimsom II', is a similarly eclectic release but importantly showcases plenty of new bars from the man, which suggests these releases aren't simply about appeasing the Grime fans ready to backlash on his movements into the mainstream.

Still to be expected is a full grime mixtape, aswell as the more commercial album due to be released on Universal Records.

Badness - Nightmare: Mensah / Cotti & Coki / Bassboy Remixes

A little late arriving, but definitely worth the wait, the tenth vinyl release from No Hats No Hoods is a genre-spanning offering. Badness collaborates with Lil Nasty and grime scene don Skepta for the original title track, the classic stylings of which sets it up as one of the biggest grime releases of the year so far.

What makes it a surprising release, though, is the fact that each of the three remixes accompanying the original tune are actually very good. So often, remixes are simply tacked onto single releases for lack of a decent flipside, but not here...

Fast-rising Bristolian Mensah keeps the vocals intact and backs them with a simple rolling bass and hard-hitting snare:

Cotti and Coki also apply their trademark stamps to the track, as Badness' eery intro vocals are stretched out to full effect, before Coki's current favoured sound drops into the mix:


Finally, Bassboy switches from a half-time dub-reggae intro straight into an old school 4x4 bassline flex:
